BREAKING: HURRICANE ALEX GETS READY TO RIP INTO TEXAS COASTLINE

By Randy Economy

June 30, 2010
12:57 a.m. PST

Off Texas:

Here comes the first hurricane for 2010, and Alex seems to be gaining speed and anger by the hour.

Hurricane Alex was official won the title of "First Hurricane for 2010" as of 8  pm PST on Tuesday.

As of this 1 a.m. PST posting, good ol' Alex was 255 miles southeast of Brownsville, Texas with top winds of 80 mph.  It is now a Category 1 Hurricane and could reach a Category 2 according to most weather divas.

Hurricane warnings are now in effect from Baffin Bay, Texas south to La Cruz, Mexico. A tropical storm warning is in effect north of the hurricane warning from Baffin Bay to Port O'Connor and south of the hurricane warning from La Cruz to Cabo Rojo.

Get ready for tons of rain from this Alex dude.  He could dump as much as 2 FEET of water in some flood prone areas.

For you "Cane trivia junkies, Alex is the first Atlantic Basin hurricane during the month of June in over 15 years, since 1995's Hurricane Allison.  Since today is the last day of June, today history could be made if an when Alex hits the US mainland.

BTW.  I leave for Kingston, Jamaica in 10 days to start work documenting the life of Catholic Msgr. Gregory Ramkissoon. So far, no other hurricanes appear to be brewing in the Atlantic basin.

Much of the Gulf of Mexico is being evacuated today for Alex and his arrival on shore. So, this will effect the oil clean up areas along the Mississippi and Louisiana and Florida coast lines.  The outer bands of Alex could cause havoc in this entire area.

Stay tuned, and be careful!

RIP: Paul Johnson, NBC4 Today in LA Morning traffic reporter passed away tonight. This man TOUCHED EVERYONE in SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA for DECADES!

"Buckle Up and BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!"

UPDATE
Tonight our world lost a great man with the passing of Paul Johnson

EVERYONE in Southern California got to know this amazing television news reporter, and "Traffic Czar" for so many wonderful reasons.

Tonight we are all saddened by his death.

Many of us never saw Paul in person, including me, but we trusted him with our lives, day in and day out for decades.

Paul Johnson was that "calm before the storm."  You know what I'm talkin' about.

He would come the radio or on Channel 4 Morning News with THAT amazing voice, to inform us that the world was coming to an end on the 405 Freeway due to an overturned tanker truck.

But none of us seemed to care. We ALL LOVED Paul.

We planned our morning drive times around HIS advice....day in and day out for DECADES!  We literally trusted our lives with him. The stories he shared with millions of us made us feel special, and he made us all feel "part" of this amazing community known as Southern California.

The deep silky voiced Johnson was 75 years old at the time of his passing in the OC. His wife Nancy and their family and close friends were with him at his bedside.
Here is a posting from the NBC4 News website tonight:

"He put up a heroic fight against a glioblastoma (brain tumor) but on Tuesday, it was time to go, and as his wife Nancy said in a voicemail to his coworkers a few minutes after he left, "He's gone to see Jesus."

The world was a better place while he was in it, telling us to "buckle up, be careful out there," but what he was really telling us is that no matter what was ahead on the road, no matter what obstacles or accidents were in the way, that it was going to be OK."

A LIFETIME OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Johnson has been a part of our local television and radio landscape.  Before joining NBC 4, he was with Metro Traffic in August 1982.   He has also reported traffic conditions for several Los Angeles radio stations, including KNX, KZLA, KACE, KXEZ and KSRF. KFAC, KUTE, and on KIIS-FM from 1969 to 1972, where he was an on-air personality.

RIP Paul!!

Cypress, CA:

Crooks have stolen the Cypress High School's Baseball team new motorized cart and tonight there is a manhunt to find those responsible for this idiotic crime.

The $7,000 vehicle, that was purchased just last week was ripped from the teams secured storage unit on the high school campus.  It is believed that the crime took place between yesterday late afternoon, and before early this morning.

The money to buy the new cart was raised by team members selling items throughout the community during fundraising events.

The cart, seen here, is used to transport heavy equipment to and from their game sites and during fundraising and sporting events. The team took delivery of the golf cart just five days ago.

The Cypress Police Department is asking the public for help in finding the golf cart and suspect(s) responsible for the theft.

The cart has a unique aluminum bed.  Here is a picture of the "hot cart."

So, if you see anyone running up and down Valley View or Walker Street in a new fancy cart, call the Cypress Police Department, Criminal Investigations Bureau at (714) 229-6631.

Los Angeles City Councilman Bernard Parks sued $146,000 by his EX Campaign Consultant John Shallman for skipping out on bills. Yikes. Go getem' Johnny!

Noted California campaign consultant John Shallman has brought legal action against Los Angeles City Councilman Bernard Parks after being left with almost $150,000 in "unpaid" campaign bills.

Wait a cotton pickin' minute?

A politician is being sued for not paying their bills while running for office.  Gee, how different.

John Shallman is one of the best political ad-visor's here in California. He is well respected and has a reputation for hard ball campaigns.  I like John....good guy!

He is great a what he does, one of the very best.  Today, John is taking hard legal action against Parks for running out on $147,000 in unpaid bills during his failed campaign for Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in 2008.

Parks, a former Chief of Police for the City of Los Angeles, lost that campaign to the winner Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas.

Shallman filed his lawsuit on Monday.  He is demanding more than $146,000 be paid to him by Parks for television advertising and other unpaid campaign expenses.

Parks "personally guaranteed" that he would repay the money but did not follow through, according to an article in today's Los Angeles Times.

Bottom line....when you run for office....pay your bills...or don't run....period.

Stay tuned.

Sen. Robert Byrd, was 92-years-old at the time of his death this morning.  He entered the United States Senate in 1958, two years before I was born.  I am now 50 years old.  I have never known of the US Senate WITHOUT Mr. Bryd being a Member.

He was a tried and true Democrat from West Virginia.  He once was a Member of the KKK.  He was colorful.  Full of vim and vigor, and brought the pork back to the Black Hills of West Virginey.

Byrd was the longest-serving Congress member in history.

His death will be talked about for months and years and generations to come.

Byrd was admitted to a Washington area hospital last week and his condition and died at 3 a.m. EST today.

Initially thought to be suffering from heat exhaustion and severe dehydration, Byrd was expected to remain in hospital for "not more than a few days," but his age and frail health got the best of him today.

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin will now appoint his successor to serve the remainder of his 2 1/2 year term.

Here is a note to Gov. Manchin:  Do America a FAVOR, and APPOINT YOURSELF to SERVE in Senator's Byrd seat.  I know the early morning quarterbacking is beginning.

Gov. Joe Manchin is amazing, and compassionate and would be a great Senator.

Remember, you heard it here first. Stay tuned.

Routine traffic stop leads to $45 Million Drug Bust in San Bernardino. Haul included a staggering 38,000 pounds of marijuana, 2,700 pounds of cocaine and 67 pounds of methamphetamine. YIKES!

This is what $45 Million worth of ILLEGAL DRUGS look like, all stuffed in the back
of a big rig truck in the Inland Empire.  The driver was stopped on a "routine traffic stop" and voila.  Makes you wonder what's "REALLY" inside some of these big rigs whizzing up and down our freeways day in a day out here in Southern California.

San Bernardino, CA--

Welcome to the "HIGH" way to CALIFORNIA DREAMS, so to speak.

Law enforcement authorities hit pay dirt this week here in the Inland Empire after they pulled over a big rig tractor trailer for a routine traffic stop.

After smelling a "strong odor" of marijuana, officials stumbled upon $45 million worth of drugs in the back of a truck they had pulled over for a traffic violation.

Deputies stopped the truck Wednesday morning, then opened the trailer after finding problems with the paperwork for the load, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office said Friday.  An "overwhelming odor" led investigators to about 20 tons of narcotics stashed in pallets in the back of the truck, including about 38,000 pounds of marijuana, 2,700 pounds of cocaine and 67 pounds of methamphetamine, the sheriff's office said in a statement.

Sheriff Rod Hoops said Friday night the seizure was one of the largest in the county's history.  The truck's driver, Fernando Luevano, 32, was arrested and charged with possession, transportation and sale of narcotics, authorities said.  I wonder who he will rat out, and who was really behind this mega huge drug haul.

Om Friday, also in the IE, another "pot bust" netted $2 Million worth of plants in an upscale quite home in Fontana.

So, stay tuned.  More details are emerging.

$2 Million Pot Bust in Fontana lands Lanson Quin in jail. Crime directly tied to Southern California Asian Gangs according to LA County Sheriff task force

Fontana, CA

More than $2 million worth of home grown marijuana was seized from a Fontana home on Friday and it has direct ties to several local Asian Street Gangs here in the Los Angeles County Area.

Operation Safe Streets - the Asian Gang Team of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department served a search warrant at a residence on the 5900 block of Wilshire Drive, Fontana on Friday and arrested at least one male adult suspect in what is being called a "major pot cultivation operation."

This investigation stemmed from information received from an anonymous informant that a male Asian adult who resides in the San Gabriel Valley area, was involved in the cultivation of marijuana.

After a three month investigation, investigators on Friday served a search warrant and entry was made into a  4-bedroom home in a quiet, well groomed neighborhood in Fontana.

Deputies found suspect Lanson Quin and detained him.   A further search of the home revealed overwhelming evidence of marijuana cultivation including special lighting and hydroponic (watering systems) equipment throughout the home. About 1,800 marijuana plants with an estimated street value of $2 million were recovered.

Investigators were at the residence late into the day collecting evidence and processing the scene.

Quin was arrested and booked at Industry Sheriff’s Station for felony cultivation of marijuana.  "The cultivation of marijuana is illegal and we will enforce the law to prevent these drugs from getting into the hands of children and adults," said Sheriff’s Captain Mike Parker.
