Los Angeles:

Something good is coming out of that tragic shooting rampage over on Devlin Avenue a couple of weeks ago that took the life of three members of the Tarin Family here in Hawaiian Gardens.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe and members of the Hawaiian Gardens City Council honored Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Freddy Brown today for his heroic actions in that shooting last week in Hawaiian Gardens.

The ceremony took place during the Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday.

Deputy Brown was honored for subduing 26-year-old Joseph Mercado, a man who allegedly shot his former girlfriend and several other family members with an assault rifle last Thursday morning while the family was asleep in their home. Six other family members, who were present during the shooting, escaped due to the swift action taken by Deputy Brown.

Sadly, Serena Tarin, her brother Alfredo Tarin Jr., and Alfredo Tarin Sr. were killed. I have been reporting on this sad story for the past two weeks.  Tonight, I hope everyone can keep the Tarin Family close in your hearts and prayers.

Hawaiian Gardens City leaders have established a memorial fund at Bank of the West to assist with burial expenses of the three people who were killed in what the Sheriff’s Department said was an attack apparently motivated by a romantic dispute.

Anyone wishing to assist the Tarin family should send contributions to:

Tarin Family Memorial Fund
C/O Bank of the West
5240 Clark Avenue
Lakewood, CA 90712
(562) 925-1211

Or, you can drop by a donation to Hawaiian Gardens City Hall at the Reception Desk.  I made a donation last week to help this wonderful family and I want ALL of my readers to make a donation as well. Lets all help.

....thanks Dep. Brown!
