Breaking News. Juggler Frank Miles has gone TALENT and well...nerves of steel. I have just watched the opening episode of "America's Got Talent" and I am predicting that FRANK MILES is going to be HUGE this year.
Scottish singer Susan Boyle in November 2009Image via Wikipedia
Yep. He is nuts. Like out of his mind wacko, but I gotta meet this guy. Frank Miles BLEW the roof off of the LOS ANGELES AUDITIONS for the 2011 season of AGT. His gig is juggling 1.5 million volts that are embedded into three stun guns, and even does it in water.

He is no Susan Boyle. As a matter of fact, if Ms. Boyle would have sung "I Dreamed a Dream" with Frank Miles juggling in the background a couple of seasons ago, dude, that would be sizzling!

Anyway. The quality of this clip via You Tube is kinda crappy. But, WTH. Frank is my newest "American Idol." Oppps. Wrong show. Go gettem, Tiger. Image representing YouTube as depicted in Crun...Image via CrunchBase

Los Angeles County Sheriff's DepartmentImage via WikipediaWe have a new winner for "Crook of the Week" here in LA County.  Yep. Today's recipient is former LASD Deputy Joseph Dyer.  Congrats, Joe.  Enjoy the next THREE years in da' state pen.

LOS ANGELES – A retired Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy who pleaded no contest in April to embezzling almost half a million dollars from the City of La Puente was sentenced today to three years in state prison. Joseph Dyer, 56, surrendered to authorities this morning to begin serving his prison term. As a sheriff’s deputy, Dyer supervised the impound program at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Industry Station and collected towing fees from residents. Dyer pleaded no contest on April 7 to one felony count of public officer crime before Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephen Marcus. The defendant and his wife, Lydia Dyer, 48, were indicted in July 2009 on charges that he stole nearly $500,000 in tow fees from La Puente between June 2001 and December 2007, and the couple failed to report that money on their tax returns. Lydia Dyer pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor count of filing a false tax return on April 7. She was immediately sentenced to 12 months summary probation. Deputy District Attorney Amy Pellman Pentz of the Justice System Integrity Division said, “Justice was served in this case.” She noted that the defendants made full restitution to the victims. Additionally, Dyer will serve time in prison and his wife will be on probation. As a condition of their plea, the defendants jointly paid $454,588 in restitution to LASD, plus $100,000 for investigative expenses. The couple also paid $44,149 in back taxes and interest to the California Franchise Tax Board on March 10. This case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Alan Jackson.  Superman in a Court Room!
The jury of eight men and four women deliberated about three days before returning this morning with a verdict in the penalty phase. The same jury convicted Fayed on May 19 of first-degree murder and conspiracy and found the special circumstances of murder for financial gain and lying in wait to be true. The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorneys Eric Harmon and Alan Jackson. Sentencing for the Ventura County businessman is scheduled for Sept. 22 before Judge Kathleen Kennedy. Pamela Fayed was stabbed 13 times near her SUV parked in a garage at Watt Tower on July 28, 2008. She and her estranged husband, the owner of a gold-trading company, had just met with their criminal attorneys over a federal investigation into the couple's business. Three other men charged in Pamela Fayed's killing are awaiting trial  separately. They are: Steven Vicente Simmons, 22, who allegedly fatally stabbed Pamela Fayed; Jose Luis Moya, 50, a Fayed employee who allegedly was paid $25,000 to arrange the murder; and Gabriel Jay Marquez, 46, who allegedly acted as lookout. Each face life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted.

Long Beach, CA

It is one of the most raw, uplifting and real portrayals of high school life in America. Its not Glee. Its not "Real World on MTV."  It is "4th and Forever," and it is real story about the Long Beach Poly High School Football team, from the inside.

Legendary. Poly is one of the best high school athletic teams in America, year in and year out.  Current TV has captured the heart and soul of this "inner city school" with this "real life" documentary series. "4th and Forever" focuses on some of the 2010 "key players" on the Long Beach Poly Varsity Football Team.

The Jackrabbits has one of the best head coaches in America in Raul Lara.
Coach Lara has become an "institution" at Poly, and one incredible man, both on and off the field.

Lara is portrayed as a coach, a father figure, a friend, role model and leader of a Poly High School. Dabness Atkins, Jeremiah Hollowell, Chaiyse Hales, Emmanuel Lara, and Devin Jackson are all prepared to earn their glory during this series of "real-ity" life.  "Let it all go, that's Poly Football" is a theme repeated over and over again.

"4th and Forever"" chronicles the 2010 football season of Long Beach Polytechnic High School...you know...the same Poly that was touted by Sports Illustrated as the "Sports School of the Century." No pressure.  Poly boasts the largest roster of high school players who have gone on to the NFL. After decades of success, Poly had a down year in 2009. They had their worst season in 15 years and lost to local rival Lakewood for the first time in over 25 years.   I followed that season.  WE ALL FOLLOWED that SEASON here in Southern California. If you live in Iowa, do yourself a favor, stay TUNED INTO this SERIES!

Scenario:
After years of being pegged as "the team to beat," the aura of invincibility is gone. The players are worried that their hopes for a college scholarship have dimmed. The clock is ticking and the question is: Can Head Football Coach Raul Lara pull the team together for one more season of greatness? And, can the players avoid the temptations of the street, succeed in the classroom, and emerge victorious on the field?
Don't waste your time on "Real Housewives."  Dedicate some real time to watch these "real life local students" right here in our community.  This is an incredible documentary. SEEN: Thursdays at 9/8c for all-new episodes of "4th and Forever."

Orange County, CA

Today is Memorial Day here in the United States. It is a day of reflection and a day to pay tribute to those heroes who have sacrificed their life in the name of "American Freedom."

I attended two wonderful community tributes today. One in Artesia at the Artesia Cemetery, and the other at Norwalk City Hall. I love my community and today we all came together as one to celebrate the lives of those brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.

I also have been touched by a young girl I have never met, but this afternoon, I vow to remember her for a long long time. Her name is Ashton Sweet.

A cheerleader and popular track athlete at Northwood High School here in the OC. Bright, full of life and energy. She really is a "sweet" person according to everyone who has ever come in contact with her.

Today we are all being touched by her life. Sweet was involved in a horrific car accident this Memorial Day weekend when according to media sources, including Eyewitness News here in Southern California reported the following details:

Authorities said 48-year-old Irvine resident Michael Ghaemi was driving a late-model Mercedes-Benz with two 14-year-old girls and two15-year-old girls to his home from a party when they were hit by 26-year-old Austin Farley.

All five in the Mercedes were transported to area hospitals. The 14-year-old girl, Ashton Sweet, was left nearly lifeless. One of the 15-year-old girls is in critical condition but is expected to survive. The other two girls and Ghaemi were treated and released.
I hope Ashton's life is never be forgotten. She is on life support as I write this blog entry.  We are all hoping for a miracle.

I have posted literally hundreds of posts here on my blog over the past five years about young people who have been killed in traffic accidents. Today, Ashton Sweet is not only another victim, but someone who has touched millions of lives over the past 48 hours all over California and the world.

A Facebook page entitles "RIP. ASHTON SWEET 1996 October 7th - 2011 May 29th. I was the 1,417th person to honor her life on Facebook. But today, I want to do much much more.

Tonight, as this Memorial Day Weekend wraps up, let's all pause and Pray for Ashton and her family. Please, share your thoughts. Hit my comment section below! God Bless you ASHTON!   I will post more about this case, and if this could have been prevented..  Right now, lets just keep our focus on ASHTON and her FRIENDS and FAMILY!

Miami, FL

One of my favorite musical performers, Sean Kingston, from Jamaica is in bad shape today after suffering a freak accident on one of those "personal watercraft" vehicles yesterday in Miami Beach.

Kingston, is in the intensive care unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital after he slammed into bridge, authorities said.

Kingston, 21, was driving the personal watercraft with a female passenger on board when the accident occurred, said Officer Jorge Pino, a spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

About 6 p.m., the hip-hop and reggae singer slammed into the Palm Island Bridge, which connects the MacArthur Causeway to Palm and Hibiscus islands. Both he and the passenger were thrown into the water, Pino said.

Kingston was born on February 3, 1990 in Miami, Florida and moved to Kingston, Jamaica when he was six.  He attended high school in Ocho Rios. His grandfather by marriage was the noted Jamaican reggae producer Lawrence Lindo, who worked under the stage name Jack Ruby. At age 11, Kingston spent 21 days in jail for breaking and entering, and Kingston lived in a car while his mother was incarcerated for identity theft

A passing boater saw the accident and took the two on board his vessel.

Take You There (Sean Kingston song)Image via Wikipedia“Sean Kingston is now stabilized and has moved from the trauma unit to ICU,’’ said Joseph Carozza, Kingston’s spokesman. “Sean's family thanks everyone for their prayers and support during this time.”
Scores of nationally known hip-hop artists converged on Miami Beach this weekend for Urban Beach Week.
Kingston’s first single, Beautiful Girls, topped the Billboard charts for three weeks in 2007. He recently toured with pop superstar Justin Bieber.

When I was in Kingston last Summer, his song "Beautiful Girls" could literally be heard on local television stations each and every hour.  He is well loved in the island nation.

Police have a double murder on their hands in Long Beach this weekend, and this case appears to already have twists and turns developing, and no suspects so far.

Here are the facts from the Long Beach Police Department's Media Division.
Last night, (Saturday, May 28, 2011, shortly after 9:30 p.m) members of the California Highway Patrol  responded to a report of a vehicle on the northbound 405 freeway, just north of the Long Beach Boulevard on-ramp, (south of the 710 freeway interchange) was containing the bodies of two deceased subjects inside.
Officers from the Long Beach Police Department also responded to the scene to investigate.
When the officers arrived, they discovered the bodies of two male adults, who were deceased from gunshot wounds, inside of a light colored SUV that was pulled over the right shoulder of the freeway.
All northbound lanes of a busy interstate were closed after the bodies of two murder victims were found inside a vehicle on the freeway.
Tonight Long Beach Police homicide detectives are trying to determine where the actual double murder took place, including the scenario that it could have taken place somewhere else, and the car abandoned on the freeway.

Long Beach Police Department (California)Image via WikipediaVICTIMS IDED
Late this afternoon, the Los Angeles Times reported that the victims are Reginald Watson Sajonas, 37, of Anaheim, and Derek Alexander Pouono, 36, of Long Beach.

Traffic was a nightmare on the 710 Saturday night between the heavily traveled northbound lanes of the freeway were shut down between Atlantic Avenue and the 710 freeway interchange for several hours.

So, now the Long Beach Police need the help of the community to help them in their investigation.
Anyone who may have any information regarding this crime is asked to contact Long Beach Police Homicide Detectives Mark McGuire or Mark Bigel at (562) 570-7244. Anonymous tips may also be submitted via text or email at www.longbeach.gov/police

CARLETON STATES: Felony Charges Filed Against Baldwin Park Man Accused of Shooting at Neighbor’s Dog

This map shows the incorporated areas in Los A...Image via WikipediaWEST COVINA – A Baldwin Park man accused of shooting at his neighbor’s barking dog in the presence of its owner, a 7-year-old girl, was charged today with half a dozen felony counts.
Carleton Raye States, 31 (dob 12/25/79), is charged in case No. KA094367 with two counts of child abuse and one count each of criminal threats; first-degree burglary, person present; discharge of a firearm with gross negligence; and having a concealed firearm.
The criminal complaint includes a special allegation of personal use of a firearm.
States is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon in Department 4 of Citrus Superior Court in West Covina.
On May 25, while the child victim was playing outside of her home with her dog “Smalls,” the defendant allegedly began taunting the animal. When the dog began to bark, the defendant purportedly drew a handgun, prompting the girl to run inside her home.
States allegedly went on to fire a round at the dog, causing the animal to run inside. Authorities allege that States then followed the child and her pet inside the home, pointed a gun at the girl – who was holding the dog in her lap – and threatened to shoot the animal.
If convicted as charged, States faces a maximum state prison term of 20 years, nine months. His bail is recommended at $270,000.

By Randy Economy
LCCN Staff Reporter
www.loscerritosnews.net

Cerritos:
It was the scariest moment anyone can experience, having a massive heart attack while sitting at your office desk.
One week ago, Los Cerritos Community News member Dario Cangas, 53, grasped his chest and yelled out to his publisher Brian Hews, Editor Jerry Bernstein, Reporter Randy Economy and Marketing Consultant Nick Nicolaides to call “911” because “I am having a heart attack.”
At that split second, the LCCN News team watched their beloved coworker struggle for air and could not imagine the horror that was playing out before them.
Grabbing the phone to call “911,” the operator on the other end dispatched emergency aid workers to the LCCN News room located at the corner of Artesia Boulevard and Shoemaker Avenue. Dario was dying and needed to get help within minutes.
Dario returns to Lakewood Regional Medical Center to thank everyone!
When paramedics and members of the Los Angeles County Fire Department Stations 30 and 35 arrived at around 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, May 19 they immediately calmed Dario down, took his vital signs, hooked him up to an EKG machine, and confirmed the worst. Dario was suffering a massive heart attack due to a total blockage in his left anterior descending artery. He was within minutes of death,
Dario suffered the worst possible kind of heart attack, in medical terms he was experiencing an acute myocardial infarction.
The only way to save his life was to have Dario taken to a fully equipped hospital that specializes in a procedure called heart cauterization and to make sure that he was operated on immediately or within the first hour, normally called the “Golden hour.” That term refers to the first sixty minutes after a patient suffers a major traumatic injury such as a stroke or heart attack. There are 33 hospitals in Los Angeles County that performs this procedure, and the closet one to the LCCN office is Lakewood Regional Medical Center located on South Street near Lakewood Boulevard around 7 miles away from the LCCN office. This facility ranks in the top six hospitals in all of LA County for stent placements.
As Dario was rushed by paramedics and fire fighters to LRH via the 91 Freeway and side crowded side streets.
The stint that saved Dario's life
Coincidentally, the Los Cerritos Community News had just published a article in their “Healthy Living Magazine” a few weeks earlier that featured the exact procedure that Dario was about to experience firsthand.
“All I could remember is the amount of pain and pressure I was feeling on my chest, it felt like someone had literally driven over the top of me with a truck. It was the most excoriating pain I have ever experienced in my life,” Cangas recanted.
LCCN Publisher Brian Hews immediately called LRMC Marketing Director Patrick Houston and alerted them that Cangas was being transported to their facility via ambulance.
Nicolaides, a friend and coworker with Cangas for more than two and a half decades literally flew down the 91 Freeway with the emergency workers to be with his friend. “I never knew that you can get from Cerritos to Lakewood so fast, I think I prayed all the entire time,” Nicolaides said.
When they arrived, a team of trained professionals from the “STEMI” Program were waiting and immediately rushed Cangas into surgery.
“Dario was experiencing the worst possible type of heart attack,” recalled Registered Nurse Kevin Brown who is the Cardiovascular Administrator at Lakewood Regional.
The team immediately reevaluated Cangas and started to place a stint through his the main vein in his
upper left leg. The stint that is around one inch long and appears to look like a “spring” had a micro
balloon attached. The first attempt failed to break through Dario’s clogged artery, and he was literally
within minutes from death.
On a second attempt, the team of doctors reached the totally plugged artery and it began to literally “melt through the blockage” and blood flow was instantly returned to Dario’s main heart muscle.
All smiles....Dario
So, instead of having to write Dario’s obituary this week, we are writing about the miracle of life and how one “local hospital” has one of the biggest heart imaginable.
“If I wouldn’t have reached Lakewood Regional in time, or if I would have been taken to another hospital, you would have been writing my obituary,” Cangas joyfully remarked.
Cangas was released from the facility within 36 hours. He was ordered on a strict new diet that will contain no processed foods, low salt, low fat and low cholesterol.
“I have to give up my cigars,” Cangas remarked,
He has also been prescribed a new daily regimen of medications including aspirin, anti coagulants, blood pressure and two different cholesterol supplements.
This week he has been given a “second chance” at life.
Dr. Jack Dobkin, the CATH Lab Medical Director for LRMC said that Dario was “lucky” but wanted to remind everyone about the signals and warning signs of heart attacks.
He said that men and women have different type of “warning” symptoms when it comes to heart attacks. “Men normally will have heaviness in their chests, shortness of breath and weakness in their legs prior to a suffering a full heart attack,” according to Dr. Dobkin, and women should always be aware of severe pains in their upper backs, throat and jaw discomfort, and indigestion problems. “Men and woman have totally different symptoms,” said Dobkin. He urged everyone to get regular screenings from their doctors.
Cangas, in the meantime, came back to work at the Los Cerritos Community News on Tuesday.
“Life really is a precious gift,” he said.
“Today I am thankful to be alive, and thankful to have had the best coworkers, and medical team anyone could ever ask for,” said Cangas.

Hawthorne, CA

I just got home after a long day covering "the world around" my community for the Los Cerritos Community News.

Tonight I attended the "PRIDE Program" graduation that is sponsored by the Norwalk Sheriff's Department, the City of Norwalk....  This is a "life shaper" and "life saving" program that deals directly with our local young people who could go down the "right" path or another much "darker one."

I am going to follow the next "class" of PRIDE Program participants later this Summer here in the Norwalk,  and will be documenting all the good works of this program.  When I was at this PRIDE event, I got a text message from a community leader in Maywood telling me that a horrific accident had taken place today and one local police officer was killed and other one was "seriously" injured.
Tonight everyone in law enforcement is mourning the death of Police Officer Andrew Garton.  It is the first time in the 89 year history of the Hawthorne Police Department  that an officer was killed in the line of duty.  Sgt. Rex Fowler from the El Segundo Police Department was the other injured officer.

Fowler has a broken leg and other injuries. Here is a video news clip from Eyewitness News that tells all the specifics....

The Hawthorne Police Department just issued the following statement.

"The Hawthorne Police Department is saddened to confirm that Officer Andrew Garton, a seven and a half year veteran of the Hawthorne Police Department, was killed in an on-duty traffic collision, on Thursday, May 26, 2011. Officer Garton was on a police motorcycle assisting in the funeral escort duties of a Manhattan Beach police officer, who had passed away earlier this month. The collision occurred near the intersection of 227th Street and Hawthorne Blvd., in the city of Torrance.
The collision is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol.
Officer Garton was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Officer Garton was 44 years old, and had been assigned to the Traffic Bureau as a motorcycle officer for the past four and a half years. Officer Garton also served as a long time member of the Department’s SWAT team.
Officer Garton was married, and had two sons, ages 12 and seven. His family and friends were brought to the hospital to be with him, and are supported also by his Hawthorne Police family and the law enforcement community at large. The outpouring of assistance and support for Officer Garton’s family and the Hawthorne Police Department is greatly appreciated.
The Department is currently arranging an account, for which donations to Officer Garton’s family can be made. Finalization of this account is pending, and information will be publicized as soon as it is established."

So, tonight, as I reflect on this up and down day, I am going to say an extra Prayer for the lives of  ALL of our "local heroes" who place their lives in harms way....everyday.

RIP, Officer Garton!
