Cerritos:
ABC Unified School Superintendent Gary Smuts’ annual jaunt to promote reading around the Cerritos, Artesia, South Norwalk, East Lakewood and Hawaiian Gardens neighborhoods took on a different mode this past week.
Normally, the athletic Smuts, and an entourage of dedicated school, community leaders and volunteers would run from each school within the ABCUSD to promote an aggressive reading program that challenges ABCUSD students to read for one million hours during a one year period.
Due to a recent double hip replacement surgery, Smuts had to make this year’s journey a “brisk walk” instead of an all out run.
