Matthew Aguilar, 28: Former CHP Officer Accused of Theft, Embezzlement

California Highway PatrolImage via WikipediaLOS ANGELES – A former California Highway Patrol officer pleaded not guilty yesterday to charges of grand theft and embezzlement, the District Attorney’s Office announced.

Deputy District Attorney Alfred Coletta of the Justice System Integrity Division said Matthew Aguilar, 28 (6/5/82), is charged with two counts of grand theft of personal property and one count of embezzlement by a public or private officer.

Aguilar was arraigned yesterday at the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. The defendant is charged in case No. BA376711. The case was filed for warrant on Oct. 12.

Aguilar is accused of taking money from a civilian victim, who subsequently reported the alleged offense. He is also accused of removing money from a CHP vehicle. The alleged crimes occurred between August and September 2008 and involve a loss of $1,230, the prosecutor said.

Aguilar faces a maximum term of three years, eight months in state prison, if convicted as charged. The defendant’s next court date is Dec. 16 in Department 33.
