LOS ANGELES – A Los Angeles police detective charged with more than half a dozen felony counts in connection with a workers’ compensation fraud investigation surrendered to authorities late yesterday, the District Attorney’s Office announced.
John Xavier Vach Jr., 37 (dob 10/19/72), was charged on Oct. 5 in a felony complaint for arrest warrant with four counts of insurance fraud and one count each of perjury by declaration, attempted perjury under oath and attempted grand theft. Vach is charged in case No. BA376558.
Deputy District Attorney Ellen Aragon of the Healthcare Fraud Division said Vach will be arraigned on Dec. 6 in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. The defendant bailed out immediately after his surrender on $120,000 bond.
The charges stem from an investigation by the LAPD’s Workers’ Compensation Fraud Unit in cooperation with the District Attorney’s Healthcare Fraud Division.
Vach allegedly operated two private businesses while out on a disability claim for job-related stress. The defendant purportedly also sought a lifetime disability pension.
Prosecutors allege that the defendant signed a fraudulent document under penalty of perjury and received benefits to which he was not entitled. The complaint alleges that the offenses occurred between February and November 2008.
Vach, a 15-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department, was last assigned to Major Crimes Division. If convicted as charged, he faces a maximum state prison term of 8 years, 10 months and a fine of up to $240,000.
