Lakewood, CA

Is it just me, or are we seeing more and more officer involved shootings lately in the greater Lakewood, Bellflower and Long Beach area?

In another incident on Saturday, Lakewood Sheriff's Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation of the circumstances surrounding a deputy-involved shooting, which occurred Saturday, June 19, 2010, in the 4200 block of Deeboyar Avenue, Lakewood.  The location is near the Lakewood Mall.

Here are the details, that were released by the Media Division of the LASD on late Monday evening:

Deputies responded to a call at the Lakewood Mall on Saturday to investigate an armed robbery.  When they arrived, they learned that the suspect had threatened mall security officers with a knife as they confronted him about stealing store merchandise.

After a crime broadcast was made to assisting units, the suspect was observed driving a short distance away from the Lakewood Mall area.

When they attempted to conduct a traffic stop, a brief pursuit ensued, terminating near Carson Street and Deeboyar Avenue.

According to reports, the suspect exited his vehicle, brandishing a knife and then fled on foot. Deputies were able to detain the suspect in the 4200 block of Deeboyar Avenue, where they ordered him to drop the knife.

When the suspect refused, a taser was deployed, striking the suspect but having no apparent effect. At this time, the suspect advanced towards the deputies with the knife. Fearing for their safety, one deputy fired multiple shots from his handgun, striking the suspect in the torso.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where his condition is described as serious.

No deputies were injured, and the name of the victim has not been released.

Last Wednesday, Sheriff Deputies in Bellflower responded to a call with a "man with a gun" at an apartment complex off of Alondra Boulevard and Bellflower Boulevard.  Dexter Luckett, a 23-year old Bellflower man was shot several times by local Deputies in a residential area off of Alondra and Bellflower Boulevard. Luckett succumbed from his injuries, and a gun was not found at the scene according to Sheriff reports. Here is more information about the incident.   More updates on both cases when they are available.

Is this the same Dexter Luckett that was on surveillance video where the police were investigating an attempted robbery/murder with a semi-automatic firearm with gang allegations, a crime that occured on 3/28/10 at a liquor store on Alondra, where the two 18th street gang members he was with who were also on surveillance are now awaiting sentencing?
