Black Friday Turns into "Green Mega Bucks" for Cerritos retailers as our local shopping frenzy tops Los Angeles TV Newscasts

"Black Friday" turned into huge greenback$ for shopping retailers throughout Cerritos this holiday weekend.

Over at the Cerritos Towne Center Best Buy, literally thousands of eager shoppers spent the entire Thanksgiving Day and Night standing in long lines that wrapped around the building and through the parking lot.

Our mega shopping lines here in Cerritos were also featured as the "top lead news" story on the 11 p.m. KCBS 2/KCAL 9 Newscast last Thursday night.

Covering the Best Buy "Blow Out Black Friday" event was Reporter Rita Ramirez (seen here with me). She interview lots of happy local Cerritos residents as they got ready to spend thousands of dollars at the midnight supersales around town.

Also seen were hundreds of local students from Cerritos High School, Gahr High School and Whitney High School.  The students waited in tents and played cards and board games to pass the time in line.

The hot sale item at Best Buy were lap top/note book computers for $199.00 and $299.00 each.

Also waiting for computer bargains for more than 30 hours were Sandeep Singh and Ashuin Patel of Buena Park.  They got lucky and scored what was on their "wish list."

www.LetsSayThanks.com will send a special note to our Troops in Iraq and Afghanastan!

I wanted to thank my pal Cerritos community leader Gail Grossman for sending me this uplifting note tonight.  Thanks, Gail.  I did this "gesture" of kindness in less than :30 seconds and the memory will last a lifetime for someone special serving our Country in harms way.
Randy Economy

Hey Randy:
XEROX IS DOING SOMETHING COOL, and I wanted to pass this along to you (and your blog).

If you go to this web site, http://www.letssaythanks.com/ you can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq. You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to a member of the armed services.

How AMAZING it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one!!! It is FREE and it only takes a second.  Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these? Whether you are for or against the war, our soldiers over there need to know we are behind them.

This takes just 10 seconds and it's a wonderful way to say thank you. Please take the time and please take the time to pass it on for others to do. We can never say enough thank you's.

Thanks for taking to time to support our military!

Deputy David Powell Highway Memorial Fundraiser held at Artesia Community Center. A Special Night in honor of a Fallen Hero!

Photos and Story By Randy Economy

(ARTESIA, CA): A community fundraiser was held Wednesday night to help pay for the construction and installation of the "Deputy David Powell Highway Memorial" sign that will be placed at the 91 Freeway and 605 Freeway Interchange later this month.

More than 200 local community leaders, elected officials, residents, and members of both the Los Angeles County Sheriff and Fire Departments attended the dinner and auction held at the historic Albert O. Little Community Center at Artesia Park.

(Seen above: Artesia Mayor Pro Tem Vic Manalo, Emma Powell, and Mayor Tony Lima.   SEEN: Sheila Martins, Tony Martins, Vidal Lourenco, and Karen Martins cooking up a STORM in the kitchen)

The event was organized and coordinated by Artesia community leader Tony Martins along with others longtime friends and family and those who served in the line of duty with Officer Powell.

Deputy David Powell was shot and killed on November 30th, 2002, after he and his partner responded to reports of gunshots near 166th Street and Elaine Avenue in Artesia at 10:30 at night.

When the officers arrived at that crime scene, they observed a man run into a home and take a woman hostage. As Deputy Powell attempted to kick the door open, the man fired two shots from inside.

One of the rounds struck Deputy Powell in the right arm, passed through the opening in his vest, and entered his chest. Deputy Powell's partner returned fire and dragged Deputy Powell to his patrol car. He then drove Deputy Powell one block away where he was met by paramedics.

Deputy Powell was transported to St. Francis Medical Center where he succumbed to his wound 90 minutes after the shooting. The suspect was shot and killed by responding officers. The weapon used in the crime was a .380 caliber hand gun.

Deputy Powell had been employed with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for 18 year, and is survived by his wife Emma (who attended the dinner), four daughters, parents, brother, and seven grandchildren. He was laid to rest in an emotional funeral that captivated many throughout the community, state and nation

To honor the life and service of Deputy Powell, local California State Assemblyman Tony Mendoza sponsored ACR 30 last year that would dedicate portion of the 91 Freeway and 605 Freeway Interchange in his memory. The bill was signed into law by California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

During the bill signing earlier this year, Assemblyman Mendoza said that “Californians are indebted every day to our peace officers, and we pay special tribute to their bravery and dedication and share in their pain when one of their members is killed in the line of duty.”

Seen: Emma Powell remembering her late husband Dep. David Powell.

The funds raised at the event will help pay for the purchase of the freeway sign as well to maintain its upkeep in the future.

(Seen below: Artesia Councilman Larry Nelson, Artesia community leader Manu Patel, community leaders Rosemary Economy and Dr, Steven Sherman, and Artesia Mayor Tony Lima).

Commander Dave Fender of the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station said during the event that the reason Deputy Powell became a law enforcement officer was to make a positive difference in other people’s lives, and as a deputy sheriff, he was praised by his peers, supervisors, and by members of the community for his tireless efforts to guide young people away from drugs and gangs.

Deputy Powell was also awarded the Medal of Valor by the City of Lakewood for saving the life of an individual attempting suicide in the year 2000, and several months prior to his death.

BTW: Who is Chris Norby? He started on the FULLERTON CITY COUNCIL...

In case you want more details about Chris Norby, who is seeking the 72nd Assembly Seat tonight here in Orange County, here is a quick snapshot.

BTW, why would ANYONE want to leave the confines of the ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS to BECOME A MEMBER OF THE California State Assembly?  Makes you wonder.
Randy Economy

Norby was elected to the Orange County Board of Supervisors in 2002, representing Fullerton, La Habra, Placentia, Buena Park and Anaheim and served as Chairman of the Board in 2007. Norby served on the Fullerton City Council from 1984-2002, including three years as Mayor.

Norby calls himself a strong advocate for fiscal reform. His program, FRESH - "Fiscal Reform: Equity, Stability, Harmony" - seeks to distribute property and sales tax dollars to local governments more fairly and equitably.

As author of "Redevelopment: The Unknown Government," Norby has analyzed the distortions caused by fiscalization of land use, sales tax competition and eminent domain abuse. Norby serves as State Chair of Municipal Officials for Redevelopment Reform (MORR) and moderates regional meetings seeking to curb abuses.

As a Chairman of the Orange County Transportation Authority, Norby supported greater design-build flexibility and a rational approach to public transit. Norby also serves as Vice-Chairman of the Fiscal Reform Committee on the Southern California Association of Governments and on the OC Sanitation District.

Norby graduated from Occidental College (a few years before Obama's arrival) and received his MA in History from Cal State Fullerton. He's a member of the Fullerton Elks Lodge, Sons of Norway and First Presbyterian Church.  He lives in his Fullerton home of 25 years with his wife Martha and their children Iris, Gary and Ana, with his son, Alex, now a sophomore at USC.

Final Lynwood City Council seat decided by just 2 votes. Councilman Ramon Rodriguez holds on. Ties to Cerritos "residency" called into question

(Re-Print from the Los Angeles Times)
(November 17, 2009, 6 p.m. PST. Lynwood, CA)-

By Randy Economy
Talk about election barn burners and controversy, this one has it all!

The November 3rd election has Lynwood City Councilman Ramon Rodriguez winning reelection by JUST TWO VOTES. But it's his past residency ties to Cerritos that are being called into question by political observers and legal experts.

I had previously blogged that Bell Gardens Councilman Daniel Crespo's FIVE vote win over challenger Luis Arias was the closest race here in the county of Angels from this past months election... but I stand corrected.

Next door in politically hot Lynwood, it now appears that controversial Incumbent Councilman Ramon Rodriguez has beat challenger Iris Pygatt for the 3rd and last slot by just TWO votes.  Pygatt, a past City Treasurer in Lynwood, took a scant 3 vote lead over Rodriguez last Tuesday, but those votes "flip flopped" when more votes were tallied last Thursday by the Los Angeles County Registrar Recorders Office.

http://www.lynwoodtruth.com/ takes an AMAZING look into the Cerritos/Rodriguez connection and is worth checking out.  Where do the Rodriguez'es really live?  In part, this is a summary from that site:

"Ramon and his wife Guadalupe Rodriguez left their beautiful home and comfortable life in Cerritos to look for "better business opportunities" in Lynwood California. (Below is there home on Ray Street in Cerritos off of 195th Street).

They were introduced to the "lucrative" political life by Arturo Reyes. In 2001, Ramon Rodriguez registered to Vote in Lynwood even though he was living Cerritos to vote and to run for the City Council.
To improve his odds for wining, he registered eight members of his family to vote in Lynwood. They listed the backroom of Ramon's hardware store as their home address, seen here."

Here are the updated results:
LYNWOOD CITY GENERAL
COUNCILMEMBER

VOTE FOR NO MORE THAN 3

MARIA T SANTILLAN    1,146  19.14%
JIM MORTON                  1,099  18.35%
RAMON RODRIGUEZ     812    13.56%
IRIS PYGATT                    810    13.53%
EDWIN R JACINTO          711    11.87%
PATRICIA CARR              707    11.81%
WALTER A LOPEZ          703    11.74%

TOTAL PRECINCTS 15
PRECINCTS REPORTING 15
REGISTRATION 20,923

BACKGROUND:
Rodriguez has served on the Lynwood City Council since 2001, with a two year absence from December 2005 and his reelection to council in October 2007.  In November 2002, he was appointed by members of the Lynwood City Council to serve as Mayor Pro Tem for a one-year term. In 2005, he was appointed a second time to serve as Mayor. Upon returning to Council in October 2007, he served as Mayor Pro Tem until December 2007.

If there is a recount, it will be up to Pygatt to pay for all related expenses. Stay Tuned, this one ain't over.

"Dirty" Special Election comes to head today Behind The Orange Curtain in the 72nd Assembly District

By Randy Economy

SANTA ANA -  Ahh, another nasty campaign reaches a climate today in The OC.

Voters in Orange County are picking a new legislator today to fill a seat left vacant after a lawmaker's sex comments led to his resignation.

Republican Assemblyman Mike Duvall stepped down in September after being caught on videotape bragging about kinky romps with lobbyists.

Five candidates are on the ballot but it's mostly been a showdown between two Republicans: county Supervisor Chris Norby and Republican National Committee member Linda Ackerman.

A candidate needs to clear 50 percent of the vote to win outright. Otherwise, a runoff will be held Jan. 12 with the top vote-getter from each party.
The campaign between Norby and Ackerman has been a real nasty one. Ackerman has been labled as an "Irvine Carpetbagger" and Norby has been called a copy-cat version of former Assemblyman Duvall and political mail also hit him on being married five times.

So, another Dirty GOP Assembly Primary in The OC comes to a climax today.

You gotta love politics behind the Curtain,

DANCE FLOOR DEMOCRACY: I VOTED 5 TIMES TONIGHT FOR KELLY OSBOURNE to get into the FINALS of DWTS!!

I love Dancing With the Stars each and every year.

Tonight is the Semi-Finals for the 2009 Edition of the blockbuster show... and I have voted FIVE times for Kelly Osbourne and  Louis van Amstel.

Donny Osmond was totally off his game tonight. Mya is just plain "perfection" (3 PERFECT 10's in the 2nd ROUND) and Joanna Krupta was as elegant as ever.

But my heart and votes went to Kelly and Louie!

I predict an all GIRL FINAL, with Donny getting the boot tomorrow nignt.

If you wanna VOTE FOR KELLY call 1-800-868-3416.

POLITICAL PIRATES OF WEEK: Four SAN JACINTO CITY COUNCILMEN Indicted on 155 Counts of Bribery, Money Laundering, yada, yada

My New Hero:
Riverside County District Attorney Rod Pacheco!
Wanted: Four NEW residents to SERVE as ELECTED OFFICIALS on the City Council in San Jacinto, CALIFORNIA.  This place has to be more corrupt than The City Council in  ___________________ (fill in the blank, your pick).  Amazing corruption in the quiet little desert enclave of San Jacinto, Ca.

I wonder if Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley would actually have the guts to nail some of our corrupt local elected officials around LA County  like Riverside DA Rod Pacheco did this week? Thanks, DA Pacheco for "walking the walk" instead of just "talking out of both sides of your mouth."

BTW, check out the cheesy, over the top, city produced video clip of  "wonderful" life inside San Jacinto City Hall.  Are you kidding me. LMAO. How about a reality check.  This town needs a total overhaul.
--Randy Economy

RIVERSIDE – On November 12, 2009, a 155-count indictment against nine people was unsealed revealing massive corruption among elected officials in San Jacinto, along with their friends, family members and business connections.

“These illegal activities threaten the integrity of our democracy,” said District Attorney Rod Pacheco. “These elected officials were entrusted with power and misused that power to advance their own political ambition and to satisfy their greed.”

Steven Russell Holgate, 62; James Williams Ayres, 48; Nancy Jo Ayres, 44; Byron Jerry Ellison Sr, 70; Jimmie Dale Stubblefield Jr, 41; John Richard Mansperger, 41; Scott Douglas Shaull, 45; Robert Edward Osborne, 69; and James Walter Potts, 67, have been named in the 155-count indictment.

The indictment, which includes 56 felonies and 99 misdemeanors, lists each of the nine defendants and their respective counts. Four of the five San Jacinto City Council members have been included in the indictment. They (left to right)  are Mayor Dale Stubblefield, Vice Mayor John Mansperger, Councilman James Ayres and Councilman James Potts.

On April 14, 2008, the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office received information that set forth various improprieties in the activities of San Jacinto City Councilman James William Ayres. In the following month, an investigation was commenced to review and verify the accuracy of the allegations set forth in the letter. Over the next 18 months investigators prepared and executed 32 search warrants including search warrants on the residences of San Jacinto Council Members Ayres, Mansperger and Stubblefield.

At the conclusion of the investigation it was determined that the council members and various campaign contributors had been engaged in a conspiracy to launder campaign funds into campaign committees which include those of Nancy Jo Ayres for San Jacinto Unified School District board of trustees and the 2006 primary election for James Ayres in the 65th Assembly District.

The conspiracy was designed to avoid the disclosures mandated by the Fair Political Practices Act and to avoid campaign contribution limits. The investigation further disclosed improprieties in the financial relationship between Stephen Russell Holgate, James William Ayres and Nancy Jo Ayres. Several other people played key roles at various stages of the inappropriate financial dealings.

The case, RIF153642, is being prosecuted by Supervising Deputy District Attorney Michael J. Cabral and Senior Deputy District Attorney Deborah Lucky.
