Los
Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe blasted state lawmakers on Thursday
for the dismantlement of community redevelopment agencies during an
address to members of the Cerritos Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Knabe
didn’t miss words in regards to his opposition to the recent number of
court rulings and new
state law that does away with CRA beginning this
past Wednesday during an address to members of the Cerritos Regional
Chamber of Commerce.

“Boy, this is going
to be a mess,” Knabe said. “As you know, redevelopment agencies have
been around for decades to give communities a chance to reinvent
themselves. There was also a 20 percent set-aside for affordable and
senior housing.”
“In many cities across California, it worked and
transformed communities. Right here in Cerritos, and in other areas of
the 4th District, this resulted in new jobs, services, and increased
property and sales tax revenues for the city, county and state,” said
Knabe.
Knabe, a former city councilman and mayor of Cerritos said
that most of the Fourth District had the most RDAs in
LA County, a total
of 17, including in Norwalk, Artesia,
Hawaiian Gardens,
La Mirada and
other area communities.
“Some have suggested that redevelopment
agencies did not have enough oversight, resulting in bloated staff and
mismanagement of funds. Yes, it’s true that there have been problems
with some agencies and those must absolutely be addressed,” he said.
“But
let’s be honest here. This isn’t an effort by the state and the
governor to clean up redevelopment. As with realignment and the move of
state prisoners to
county jails, this is one more attempt by the state
to balance its budget on the back of local government,” the supervisor
said.
