Woodland Hills, CA

What another awful afternoon involving a shooting in the City of Angels.

Jeffrey Stenroos a veteran Los Angeles city school police officer is lucky to be alive this afternoon after he was shot while on patrol just outside of the campus parking lot at the famed El Camino Real High School.

The gunman, who was allegedly attempting to break into cars parked at El Camino Real High School is still at large.

Stenroos is a well known and well like member of the school police detail that is assigned to protect the hundreds of campuses within the nations largest public school district (LAUSD).  His bullet proof vest saved his life.  He was covering for a co-worker who normally patrols this campus.  He normally patrols the neighborhood around Cleveland High School in another part of Los Angeles.

The suspect described as a male in his 40's with long hair and a black jacket is on the loose.  He is armed and very dangerous. A massive manhunt in underway and as many nine public schools were put on lock down.

Seven square miles is a huge area.  Think of the cities of La Palma, Artesia, and Hawaiian Gardens COMBINED.  Around 9000 anxious students are held up in campuses as they try to find the suspect.

Great news:  Stenroos could be released later tonight.  The bullet just missed his heart and lung area.

The Los Angeles Unified School District released this official statement:

"Please do not come to ECR to pick up your children. We are not yet dismissing the students—LAPD must let us know when we may dismiss them. All the students are fine and safe. The incident happened off campus. We will update this page with more news as we have it."
