JOSE DERAS: South Gate man charged with beating death of his infant daughter. $5 Million Bail set.

DOWNEY – A South Gate man charged in the alleged beating death of his infant daughter is expected to be arraigned today, the District Attorney’s Office announced. Deputy District Attorney June Chung of the Norwalk Branch Office said Jose Tulio Deras, 20 (dob 7/12/90), is due to appear in Department 7 of Downey Superior Court. He is charged in case No. VA118244. Deras is charged with one count each of murder and assault on a child causing death for the Jan. 15 killing. The defendant’s 9-month-old child is identified as Valerie in the criminal complaint. Deras, who is also accused of assaulting his wife, additionally faces one count of sodomy by use of force with allegations that the defendant used a knife and tied and bound the victim. The defendant allegedly killed the child and assaulted his wife at the couple’s South Gate apartment. If convicted as charged, the Deras faces a maximum prison sentence of 50 year to life. Bail for the defendant is $5 million.
