LONG BEACH – A 17-year-old Gardena High School student suspected of carrying a gun to school on Tuesday that discharged, striking two students, was charged today with two felonies. Deputy District Attorney Joanne Baeza, deputy in charge of the Long Beach Juvenile Branch, said prosecutors charged the minor, (dob 7-26-93), with one count of possessing a firearm in a school zone and one count of discharging a firearm in a school zone. Baeza said prosecutors also filed a motion to have the minor, whose name is being withheld because of his age, tried as an adult. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday at Long Beach Juvenile Court, Department 245, on case NJ25562. He remains in custody. The 17-year-old, who is on probation for a misdemeanor battery charge, allegedly carried a loaded 9 millimeter Beretta in his backpack to school on Tuesday. When he allegedly reached inside the backpack to get something to eat, the gun discharged a single bullet. The bullet struck a 15-year-old boy in the neck before next hitting a 15-year-old girl in the side of the head, officials said. The incident occurred about 10:40 a.m. inside a classroom.
