JOHN WESLEY EWELL: New Murder Charges Added in Home Invasion Case from Hawthorne

LOS ANGELES Prosecutors added today two additional capital murder charges against a man earlier charged with the home invasion robbery and murders of a Hawthorne couple in October, the District Attorney’s office announced.

Deputy District Attorney Bobby Grace in Major Crimes said John Wesley Ewell, 53, is now charged with the Sept. 24 murder and robbery of a Hawthorne man and the Oct. 13 murder and robbery of a Los Angeles woman.

Arraignment for Ewell, who is being held without bail, on the amended complaint is scheduled for Nov. 30 at Airport Superior Court, Department 144.

Ewell is charged in case SA075757 with four counts of murder with the special circumstance of murder during a robbery, which makes him eligible for the death penalty. He also is charged with four counts of first-degree residential robbery and one count of receiving stolen property.

Grace said Ewell is charged with breaking into the Hawthorne home of Hanna Marcos on Sept. 24 and robbing and murdering the man. The home was near where the bodies of Leamon and Robyn Turnage were discovered in the 4100 block of West 142nd Street. They were murdered on Oct. 22.

He also is charged with breaking into the Los Angeles residence of Denise Roberts on Oct. 13 and murdering her. Her residence is near where Ewell was living at the time in the 12600 block of Hoover Street.
Ewell, a second striker convicted of robbery in 1988 and again in 2005, is being held without bail.

Prosecutors will decide later whether to seek the death penalty.
