JUSTICE FOR JAMIEL: Pedro Espinoza found GUILTY of capital murder of JAMIEL SHAW

LOS ANGELES – An 18th Street gang member was convicted by a Los Angeles Superior Court jury today of the capital murder of high school football player Jamiel Shaw Jr. outside his home four years ago. The jury in the court of trial Judge Ronald H. Rose deliberated less than four hours before convicting 23-year-old Pedro Espinoza of first-degree murder with the special circumstance allegation that it was a gang killing. Jurors additionally found true allegations that defendant personally and intentionally discharged a firearm causing the victim great bodily injury and death and that the murder was committed for the benefit of a criminal street gang. Judge Rose scheduled the penalty phase of the trial to begin on May 15 in Department 134 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Deputy District Attorneys Robert Grace and Allyson Ostrowski from the Major Crimes Division are prosecuting the case. Espinoza, a documented 18th Street gang member, shot and killed 17-year-old high school senior Shaw on March 2, 2008. Shaw was a star football player at Los Angeles High School. The defendant was arrested by Los Angeles police shortly after the killing and has remained in custody without bail.
