LONG BEACH – Following five days of deliberations, jurors today
convicted a 34-year-old man of the
robbery-motivated murder of a
San Pedro woman, the District Attorney’s Office announced.
Deputy District Attorney Julian Recana of the
Long Beach Branch Office said Michael Lee Bonfiglio was convicted of one count of
first-degree murder with the special circumstance
allegation of murder during the commission of a robbery.
Bonfiglio also was convicted of one count each of conspiracy to commit a crime and second-degree robbery. Jurors found true a principle armed allegation as to all counts.
The defendant faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole when he returns for a priors trial and sentencing on May 25. Long Beach Superior Court Judge Mark Kim presided over the trial.
Bonfiglio is alleged to have three felony convictions dating as far back as 1996 for
possession of a controlled substance for sale and sale of a controlled substance.
Bonfiglio and two others were charged with the murder of Ginie Samayoa, 27, whose body was discovered on Jan. 30, 2009, in a San Pedro alley two blocks away from her home. The victim was seated in the driver’s seat of her car with a single gunshot wound to the back of the head. She was taken to a local hospital where she died the next day.
Co-defendants Raul Tiscareno, 29, and Daniel Keith Martinez, 37, both of Whittier are
pending trial. Tiscareno and Martinez are scheduled to appear in court on April 23 for pretrial.
The defendant – a friend of the victim – aided with the robbery and murder for the purpose of stealing the woman’s laptop which contained credit card information that she was using for identity theft, the prosecutor said. Martinez is alleged to be the triggerman.
Officers of the
Los Angeles Police Department investigated the case.
