Hawaiian Gardens Boxer Abner Mares Wins World IBF Bantamweight Title
In
thrilling and controversial fashion, Hawaiian Gardens' own Abner Mares
beat Joseph Agbeko to win the world IBF bantamweight title Saturday, the
fight was held at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. Mares won on a
majority decision, two judges scored the fight 115-111 and the other
scored 113-113.

11th round decision of referee Russell Mora not to deduct a point for an
obvious low blow by Mares, who already had been warned before. All
judges scored the 11th round for Mares 10-8.
“I
had two opponents today, the Mares and the referee”, said Agbeko after
the fight. There were two other low blow incident by Mares where the
referee did not deduct points, stunning most of the crowd. Many of
Mares’ blow were on the belt, “I am not aiming for low blows”, Mares
said after the fight.
Agbeko asked for a rematch, which Mares was heard saying “bring it on”
