Sacramento, CA
Two members of the California State Assembly had to be pulled apart this afternoon after they nearly came to blows when one member made an idiotic comment over "Italians" and the "mafia."  If you want to truly understand the what really goes on in Sacramento, all you have to do is WATCH this 8 minute clip that has just been loaded up on You Tube. Assemblyman Don Wagner, R-Irvine pissed off other members of the California "lower house" (pun intended) when he started comparing Italians to the mafia as it relates to how cities here in California oversee taxpayer dollars when it comes to the use of redevelopment funds.  The bill that was being formally debated was AB 1X AB26 by Los Angeles Assemblyman Bob Blumenthal.
Wagner was talking about the law that would end redevelopment agencies and replace them with an other programs in lieu of the ongoing fiscal mess that politicians have created year in and year out. After Wagner remarked that lawmakers should not "buy an insurance policy that Tony Soprano is selling us," Italian Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, D-La Canada Flintridge (Los Angeles County), with cane in tow,  rose to ask for an apology to Italian-Americans . Yikes.  Bad move, Portantino. "I will apologize to any Italians who are not in the mafia and engaged in insurance scams," Wagner said to audible boos and other negative reaction from lawmakers.  Overseeing the assembly session was Speaker Pro Tem Fiona Ma from San Francisco.  Ma look horrified, and then all hell broke loose. Japanese-American Assemblyman Warren Furutani,D-Gardena got totally pissed off over the comment, and Wagner rose again to make matter worse. You don't want to mess with Warren.  He is a bad ass who stands up for all "people of color" here in California.  "My apology, if one is needed, is sincere. My reference is certainly not one that no one in this room gets. My reference is not to suggest -- and I think my colleagues on the other side of the aisle, especially one that seems to be particularly outraged over this for reasons I don't understand -- my reference is not lost on anyone here. This is not an attack on anyone. This bill is a bait and switch," he said. That was enough for Furutani.  He and Wagner got into each others faces, and it even looked to some observers that they even pushed each other at one point.  Sacramento Gone Wild.  A pay per view cage match is in the works between "The Wags" and "Warren F" for the fall.  Stay tuned.  Dont you love SACRAMENTO in the SUMMER TIME!
