POMONA – A 28-year-old Montclair man appeared for arraignment today in connection with a 2002 speed contest between two vehicles that culminated with a fatal crash that killed three young men. Deputy District Attorney Lalit Kundani of the Pomona Branch Office said Roque Torres, charged in case No. KA093327, faces three counts of second-degree murder, three counts of vehicular manslaughter, one count of leaving the scene of an accident and allegations that he fled the scene of a crime. Torres was arraigned and pleaded not guilty before Pomona Superior Court Judge Mike Camacho. He was ordered to return April 1 for a preliminary hearing. Bail was set at $200,000. The case, filed on Feb. 9, went unsolved for almost eight years until officers of the Pomona Police Department received an anonymous tip last October, prosecutors said. Torres is accused of engaging another vehicle in a street race on Dec. 20, 2002. The driver of the other vehicle, Jamael Glenn Johnson, 22, and two passengers, Jose Issac Batres, 26, and Carlos Mendoza, 20, were killed when their vehicle collided with a van. The driver of the van sustained serious injuries.
Torres faces life if convicted of murder.
