GREAT NEWS out of Long Beach this afternoon. Two men have been arrested in that ugly shooting incident that left one Detective injured last weekend from a gun shot wound. This is "hot off the press" from the Media Relations Department (one of the BEST in SO. CA!) at the LBPD.

Image via WikipediaThe Long Beach Police Department is pleased to announce that two arrests have been made resulting from the investigation of the January 29, 2011, attempted murder of two Long Beach Police gang detectives.This incident launched an intense 5-day investigation, which included many hours of witness interviews and analysis of forensic evidence that culminated with the identification and arrest of the suspects. They have been identified as Erick Sianez and David Silva. Both suspects are 19-year-old Long Beach residents and documented members of a local street gang.
On Tuesday, February 1, 2011, at approximately 12:00 p.m., Suspect Sianez was observed in the area of Cowles Street and Magnolia Avenue in Long Beach and was taken into custody. After further investigation, he was booked for the attempted murder of the detectives.
On Wednesday, February 2, 2011, at approximately 4:10 p.m., Suspect Silva was observed in the area of the 710 Freeway and Del Amo Boulevard in the City of Long Beach and was also taken into custody.
Today, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office filed felony charges against the suspects, which included charges of brandishing a firearm, attempted murder of a police officer resulting in great bodily injury, assault with a deadly weapon, and shooting at an occupied vehicle. These charges also include gang enhancement allegations. The defendants will return to court on February 24, 2011, for their preliminary hearing. Defendant Sianez’s bail was set at $2,040,000 and Defendant Silva’s bail was set at $3,040,000. Both will be held at the Los Angeles County Jail.
These charges resulted from the initial incident that occurred on Saturday, January 29, 2011, at approximately 10:50 p.m., when the suspects drove up to a group of individuals near McArthur Park and fired a shot into the air. As they fled from the scene, they drove in the direction of a police vehicle occupied by the two gang detectives. The fully uniformed detectives were operating an
identifiable police vehicle equipped with emergency lights and siren. The detectives heard the shots behind them near the park and began to make a U-turn to investigate. At that time, the suspects fired multiple rounds at the detectives as they drove past them. The detective driving the police vehicle was struck in the upper torso in an area unprotected by his vest. The detective attempted to pursue the suspect vehicle; however, his injury prevented him from doing so. The detectives switched positions, and the injured detective was transported to the hospital by his partner. The detective has since been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
A group of police officers were on the southeast corner of Anaheim Street and Mahanna Avenue on an unrelated investigation, heard the shots being fired, and an officer from within that group saw the suspect fire shots into the detective’s vehicle. That officer then fired his weapon at the suspects as they fled in their vehicle southbound on Mahanna Avenue from Anaheim Street. As the suspects fled, they tossed a handgun out of the vehicle, which was recovered by officers. The suspects abandoned their vehicle a few blocks away and fled from the area on foot.
At today’s news conference held at Long Beach Police Headquarters, Police Chief Jim McDonnell thanked many Police Department employees for their hard work and dedication to this investigation, which included employees assigned to the Homicide Detail, the Career Criminal Apprehension Team, and the Gang, Narcotics and Warrant Detail. Especially high on his list of praise were employees of the Forensic Services Division, as their efforts proved to be invaluable to the investigation.
Chief McDonnell also thanked U.S. Marshal David Singer and his deputies, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for their contributions to this investigation.
