POMONA – A 19-year-old man who pleaded guilty last fall to participating in more than two dozen armed robberies with his mother and her boyfriend was sentenced to state prison today.
Pomona Superior Court Judge Charles Horan sentenced Joshua Brandon Oosterhoff to 10 years in state prison. The defendant pleaded guilty to 34 robbery counts and allegations on Sept. 20, 2010. The defendant pleaded open to the court, meaning the plea was not part of a negotiated settlement with the District Attorney’s Office.
The young man’s mother, Paulene Mendoza Oosterhoff, 39, was the getaway driver, while her son and boyfriend were the gunmen, said Deputy District Attorney Lalit Kundani, who prosecuted the case.
The mother and her boyfriend, Joseph John Ostos, 28, pleaded and were sentenced on Sept. 15, 2010.
Oosterhoff pleaded guilty to six counts of robbery and was immediately sentenced to 10 years in prison. Ostos pleaded no contest to 10 counts of robbery and was sentenced to 28 years in state prison.
The charges, filed in June 2010, stemmed from at least 25 armed robberies of liquor stores, gas stations and mini-marts in Norwalk, El Monte, Azusa, Covina, West Covina, Glendora, San Dimas, Claremont, Rancho Cucamonga and Fontana, the prosecutor said. The defendants made away with at least $15,000 during the course of the crime spree, between April and June 2010.
