LA PALMA –

Sad news this morning from John F. Kennedy High School in La Palma.

That 16-year-old girl who was struck by a car while walking to school on Monday morning has died from her injuries.

I have been sent several notes in the past couple of  hours telling me that Sydney Ramirez, 16, a student at Kennedy High School has passed from her wounds and injuries she suffered.

The John F. Kennedy High School student was walking across a marked crosswalk in the intersection of Crescent Avenue and Watson Street about 6:45 a.m. on Monday morning when she was struck by a vehicle traveling west on Crescent, police said in several local newspapers.

We all drive through that intersection...day in and day out....and we all know firsthand how dangerous and crowded that location can be during morning and afternoon traffic periods.  The driver in the accident has not been charged.

My heart breaks for the Family, and for all the students at Kennedy High School. The young Sydney was a resident of Cypress.

If you have a special memory of Sydney, please share your thoughts here in my comment section.  Let's all remember how precious life is, especially for our young people.  As soon as funeral and memorial arrangements are announced by the school I will be posting them here with the community.

Be safe, and remember, we all live here, and our streets need to be safe at all times. Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the accident to call the La Palma Police Department at 714-690-3370.

The JFK High School community is so tight knit, and lots of love is being given to the family.

I have hated that crosswalk for years and its a shame this death has taken place.

I go to JFK, and we are all so so sad, and angry at the same time. All we can do is Pray.

It always takes a death for a city to put a stop sign. I live in Lakewood and a similar situation happened years ago it took the death of this young girl who was crossing the street to put in a stop sign for years the city was told. I feel so bad for the Garcia family may sydney rest in peace and her family find peace.

In an instant the lives of the two families’ have been changed. The children who go to Kennedy have a memory they could have done without. Hopefully change will come out of this tragedy and a cross walk stop light will be place at this intersection. Let us pray that it is sooner rather than later.

Sydney was the most amazing person ever, shes always smiling & everytime i was down she'd somehow make me laugh or smile. her glow was contagious. It's sad that it takes loved ones death to change something. People need to drive slower, more careful & observant. Please don't make the mistake of not paying attention it caused me a heartbreak.

our prayers go out to Sydney's family as well as her. we hope that their family can cope with this unfortunate incident little by little. She was a fun loving caring person who always had a smile on her face. she touched everyones hearts no matter what.....and as for the driver we believe she should get some sort of punishment because its common sense that she was not driving at a normal speed. also she must of been doing something else while she was driving because you can clearly see that she was not paying attention to the road and her surroundings. its sad to know that an accident has to occur in order for a city to realize the dangers of crosswalks like the one by JFK...but on the bright side our school has brought us all together in helping others who need support with coping with Sydney's death...we love you Sydney ♥ Rest in Paradise ♥♥♥♥

A lot of Sydney's friends are holding a car wash and the community is invited to attend this Sunday at JFK High School. Can you put this information on the blog so everyone can help support the family?

I just drove by high school and saw all of Syd's friends holding signs and telling everyone to SLOW DOWN and BE CAREFUL!

My heart goes out to the Garcia family as well as all of Sydney’s friends.
I live within doors reach of the crosswalk on Crescent where the incident occurred.
The street is dark and aligned with parked vehicles at 6:30am.
My heart also goes out to the driver of the vehicle; it was a tragic accident for all involved. I find it very fast paced and hectic to exit my driveway every morning for work at the same time young adults are rushing to school at Kennedy High.
As a neighbor of the school; Crossing Crescent Avenue in Cypress into La Palma which is where Kennedy High School resides, I know that this will become a controversy for both cities, however the solution would be that both cities pay for the installation of “In ground flashing lights” along the crosswalk as well as a Stop sign, The bright flashing lights lining the crosswalk draw attention to the crosswalk making it more likely that drivers will slow to a stop. It takes a tragedy like this to open the eyes on City Politics. Cars Kill
JUST PAY FOR A SAFE CROSSING ALREADY, THIS TRAGEDY COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED. Rest in peace Sydney, you are among other young adults that have had their lives taken to soon as well. You will be sadly missed.

Really sad to hear about this... I was a friend of her's in 8th grade, and we had a little crush on each other. It's hard to think she's gone now.

I'm a student who goes to cypress college and i pass this intersection everyday and I'm actually not surprised that someone's gotten hit. this intersection is extremely dangerous since there's nothing that allows drivers to see pedestrians. I'd never walk across this crosswalk at night since there's no lights or anything else that alerts drivers to the pedestrian crossing. even when there's a person walking students across the street, some drivers on the far side of the road are put in a blind spot. maybe a stop sign might help but a light would do wonders
