Rio Hondo College is mourning the loss of one of its brightest "star athletes" with the sudden passing of wrestler Jesus "Jesse" Cruz on Saturday.

Cruz, a standout student/athlete and resident of Covina died at a hospital Saturday after collapsing during a wrestling match at Mt. San Antonio College.   He was competing in the "San Antonio Duals" and was going head to head with a wrestler from Cerritos College.

Cruz became "unresponsive" during the match and CPR was performed for several minutes.   He was transferred to San Dimas Community Hospital where he passed away.  The event was immediately canceled.
An autopsy is pending by the Los Angeles County Coroners Office, but it is believed that Cruz may have died from "natural causes."

Cruz was in his second year with the wrestling team, and was considered to be one of the best "all around" student athletes at Rio Hondo College.

I spoke to my longtime friend Gary Mendez who is a Trustee for Rio Hondo College and he told me  that: "Jesse was one of the best and brightest students here at Rio Hondo College.  He was the perfect role model for our community, and is someone everyone loved. We are in a state of shock.  My thoughts and Prayers are with his many friends and family members."

Cruz was an excellent student who maintained a high GPA.  He was also a  "Community College All American" and Captain of the Rio Hondo College Wrestling Team.  Cruz attended Northview High School in Covina before attending RHC.

Grief counselors will be on the campus starting of Monday.  Funeral services have not been made public.
If you have a memory of Jesse, please FEEL free to share it here on my Blog.  Hit the comment section below. Again, my thoughts and Prayers are with Jesse and his family and all of the Rio Hondo College community during this tragic time.
