MacArthur Park LakeImage via WikipediaLOS ANGELES – Two men convicted of an infant’s murder three years ago in MacArthur Park and the attempted murder of a street vendor who refused to pay “taxes” were sentenced today to life in prison.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler sentenced Juan Pablo Murillo, 34, who was second-in-command of the gang, to life without possibility of parole plus an additional 114 years to life in prison, said Deputy District Attorney Victor Avila.

Guadalupe Torres Rangel, 42, an associate, also was sentenced to life without possibility of parole plus an additional 107 years to life in prison.

The two defendants were convicted of the first-degree murder of 23-day-old Luis Garcia, who was fatally shot once in the chest on Sept. 15, 2007. The infant was in the park with his mother and were standing near a street vendor, Francisco Clemente, when gunfire erupted.

The two also were convicted of additional charges, including conspiracy and the attempted murder of Clemente, who was targeted by the gang because he refused to pay “taxes” to the gang, Avila said.
Clemente, shot four times, survived the attack.

In addition to finding them guilty of first-degree murder and other charges, the jury found true the special circumstance that the murder and attempted murder were carried out to further a gang.

Sentencing for co-defendant Yovanni Velasquez, 28, was continued to Sept. 24. Sentencing for the admitted shooter, Giovanni Macedo, 20, is scheduled for Aug. 31.  Judge Fidler sentenced co-defendants David Gonzalez, 22, to 11 years in state prison and Ralph Santiago, 29, to 13 years in state prison on July 19.
