It is a nightmare beyond words. 

What was suppose to be a joyous trip for a group of California Baptist University athletes in Riverside as turned into the unspeakable tragedy that is unfolding on a highway up in the Bishop, California area at this very moment.


Tonight, the California Highway Patrol is confirming through its traffic website that at least six people were killed and 12 injured in a fiery collision near Bishop.  One of them killed is being identified by the News Enterprise in Riverside as a member of the CBU Cross Country team.

CBU ATHLETES IN VANS CONFIRMED BY CHP:

CHP has confirmed that the van involved was indeed transporting athletes from nearby California Baptist University in Riverside.  The University has not issued any official details via its website. 

The van was one of three university vans heading northbound on U.S. Highway 395 about five miles south of Bishop when a Ford SUV traveling in the opposite direction lost control shortly after 8 p.m.

The SUV smashed into one of the vans and burst into flames.

A second van traveling behind avoided the collision but a vehicle behind it smashed into the burning SUV according to reports.

Five of the fatalities were inside the SUV and one was inside the van.  The scene is still being investigated.

California Baptist University (CBU) is one of the top private Christian colleges and universities in Southern California.
