Santa Catalina Island, CA --

Here are more details on that plane crash over on Catalina Island this afternoon that resulted in the death of the pilot

The crash occurred very close to several youth camps that were occupied at the time of the incident. A brush fire has been burning dangerously close to these island youth camps, and authorities are on the scene dealing with the situation.

The plane crashed shortly after 1 p.m. about two miles from the airport in a remote, hilly area near Echo Lake, and it appears that the pilot may have suffered a heart attack prior to the accident.  The pilot, who has not yet been identified radioed the airport that he could make the runway, but officials said that the sole occupant of the aircraft was dead when they reached the crash site.

A brush fire, that is estimated to be between 15 and 25 acres, is now 50 percent contained, with no flames showing.
