Backers of Oscar Grant, the African American man who was killed by a white BART police officer Johannes Mehserle on New Years are beginning to protest in the streets of Oakland, California.

Nearly 1,000 people are currently marching through Oakland to demonstrate against the verdict in the Johannes Mehserle case.   Mehserle now faces anywhere from 2 years to 9 years in jail, and he could actually get off with less, depending on the sentencing phase that still needs to take place.

News channels around California are beginning to cover the people who are beginning to protest.

The first crowd began their march around 5:30 p.m. Thursday near Oakland City Hall, they are now  moving through downtown, past businesses that have boarded up as a precaution against possible riots.

Protesters are standing face to face with police officers in riot gear. We have seen protesters jump on police cars.  Head to the internet and check out the live coverage on any of the Bay area news stations.

Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums has pleaded for those unhappy with the involuntary manslaughter verdict to protest peacefully.

He acknowledged that many in the community are outraged at what they believe is an unjust verdict for the former Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer who fatally shot an unarmed black man, according to reports on KTVU Channel 2 News in the Bay Area.

I beleive in the verdict.....Cannot see this as nothing but an accident and must put blame on the thug that didnt do as the officers said...if that was me I would have complied with thier orders and taken care of my anger later. Johanne didnt mean to kill this thug, and it was an accident. Would Thugs have protested if it was a Black man that said he accidently got his gun and not a taser? NO! So Johanne do what time they give you and then move on with your life....alot of people believe this was a tragedy on your part!
