WHITTIER – The sad legal saga of former La Mirada Pop Warner football coach and Whittier Police Officer Paul Ayala came to a head today when he plead "no contest" to sexually molesting four young boys from our community.

He also plead no contest to having sex with a minor female.

The young boys he molested all played on his football teams.  Tonight he is heading to prison for a long, long time.

Ayala, 42, entered the plea before Superior Court Commissioner Loren Di Frank on Thursday where he was immediately sentenced to 24 years in state prison as part of a negotiated plea.

He will also be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.  In addition he also plead no contest to molesting a female minor as well.

Ayala, is also a  17-year veteran of the Whittier police force.   Ayala retired from the Whittier police department for medical reasons on July 20, 2007.

I wonder if we taxpayers are going to be paying for his "public pension" while he is in prison for the next 24 years?   Makes you wonder about our legal system.

Immediately following his retirement, Ayala began to teach physical education at Beatitudes of Our Lord School Catholic School in La Mirada.

The female victim in the case is a former teenage female of his who reportedly attended Beatitudes while he was a teacher there.

Ayala was initially charged with one felony count of oral copulation of a child under 10 and eight felony counts of sexual molestation of a child under 14 involving two boys, who were each 10 at the time of the incidents.

Tonight, I hope we can continue to protect the lives of our young children from monsters like Paul Ayala.
The nightmare of this case is finally over.
