What a traffic nightmare that has played out all morning and afternoon here on the 405 Freeway in West Los Angeles.

A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer was critically injured in a crash that shut down a busy portion of the 405 Freeway on Wednesday for nearly 8 hours.

The officer was making a routine traffic stop around 8:45 a.m. on the side of the freeway when another motorist crossed into the shoulder, striking the officer and pushing him into a second vehicle.  The accident took place around the National Boulevard off ramp.

The officer is in critical condition and was rushed to nearby UCLA Medical Center.  The SUV's two occupants received minor injuries. The other driver's condition was not known.

Some of the freeway is open now, but this traffic nightmare is going to last for several more hours.  The side streets and local neighborhoods along the 405 and 10 Freeways are literally a maze of cars linked bumper to bumper.
