SANTA CLARITA -- Two people have been arrested this afternoon in regards to the 5 Freeway crash in the Newhall Pass that has left five people dead, including four children, three being from Whittier.

The crash, which occurred during a downpour, was reported at 12:14 a.m. Monday in the southbound lanes of the Newhall Pass, near the junction with the Antelope (14) Valley Freeway. The driver of a red Mazda pickup lost control, spun into the center divider and overturned at about midnight. Victor Jarillo, was arrested for vehicular manslaughter for allegedly driving without a license, and his passenger was taken into custody on suspicion of providing false information to officers, according to officials with the California Highway Patrol.

The crash killed four children, three who lived here in a quiet East Whittier neighborhood and their cousin from the Oakland Bay area.

Tonight, the community is just beginning to cope with the tragic news. Those identified by the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office and California Highway Patrol are:

Injured:

  • Jessica Milan, a 27-year-old passenger in the Nissan, was hospitalized in critical condition.

  • Francisco Enciso, 25, of Daly City, suffered major injuries and was the driver in the car with Millan.

  • Joana Avina, 27, of Los Angeles, minor injured

  • Alberto Jarillo, 34, minor injuries

  • Jesus Jarillo, 2, minor injuries

  • Emmanual Jarillo, 1, minor injuries
Killed:

  •  Xochlit Hernandez, age 5 of Whittier

  •  Cynthia Hernandez, 8, Whittier

  •  Edgard Hernandez, 9, Whittier

  •  Luis Villegas, 12, of Daly City/Oakland (Cousin of the Hernandez children. It is being reported that Villegas was moving to Whittier to live with his cousins).

  •  John Blackburn, 54, of Frasier Park (driver in another car involved)

Traffic was shut down for nearly 9 hours in the Newhall Pass today after a multi-vehicle pileup on the rain-soaked roadway.

Two of the Hernandez children, Cynthia and Edgard, attended elementary school in the East Whittier City School District. I will give more details later.

Tonight, the community here in Whittier is praying for those who were lost today.  A Memorial Fund is already being established.  I will post the details as soon as they are available.

Dear Randy - Today I went to Rose Hills to plant flowers on my grsndmothers' grave. I couldn't help but notice all the flowers on the graves just below my grandmothers. I went to look to see who it was and realized it was 3 young children. The Hernandez children. I was touched by their deaths and I spent about an hour planting the flowers that were left in pots on their graves. Someone has been their recently to leave the flowers. As a mother, my heart goes out to the family and to the children. I'm sure their mother will wonder who planted the flowers. I hope she won't be angry with me. If you have contact with her, tell her it was done with love.
