SANTA CLARITA -- A nightmarish accident took place early this morning on the Golden State Freeway that resulted in the death of five people, including four children and one adult.

The four children killed were all seated in the back seat of one of the cars involved.

Traffic was shut down for nearly 9 hours in the Newhall Pass today after a multi-vehicle pileup on the rain-soaked roadway.

The crash occurred during a massive downpour.

News agencies from all over America covered horrific scene.  The main car involved was completely destroyed.

Here are the facts of the accident, even though a final report is still in the process of being completed.
  •   The driver of a red Mazda pickup lost control, spun into the center divider and overturned at about 11:55 p.m. Sunday.
  • A Nissan Altima carrying a family struck the pickup and was then hit by a Chevrolet Suburban.
  • The crash killed the pickup's driver, identified as John Blackburn, 54, of Frasier Park.
  • The names of the four children killed have not been released by the Los Angeles Coroner's Office. As soon as the names are known, I will be posting them here on my Blog.
