The County of Los Angeles is joining the effort to help the victims of the massive deadly earthquake in Haiti tonight by deploying it's famed "Search and Rescue Operations Team" into Port-au-Prince area tonight.

The C-17 Cargo Plane is on a "mission of mercy" and left March Air Reserve Base tonight at 10:10 p.m.  full of the best trained search and rescue experts anywhere in the world.

Much of Haiti was destroyed when a 7.0 magnitude earthquake rocked the Caribbean island a little more than 28 hours ago..

The 72-member heavy rescue task force that left tonight from LA County, received a request for help from the U.S. Agency for International Development, fire officials said.  This is what it looks like inside a C-17 Cargo Carrier.

The team includes paramedics, search dogs, communication specialists and rescuers who are trained in combing through collapsed structures to find victims.

The rescuers rely on sophisticated detection devices and equipment capable of shoring weakened structures and moving heavy chunks of rubble, officials said.  Relief officials said they were preparing for substantial damage and casualties after Haiti was rocked by the quake, the largest to ever strike the region.  The flight to Haiti is expected to be around 10 hours.

God Speed!
