The Los Angeles County Maritime Region Radiation Nuclear Detection Coalition conducted a Maritime Radiation Chokepoint Operation on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the Los Angeles/ Long Beach Port Complex.
Vessels from the United States Coast Guard, Los Angeles Port Police Department, Long Beach Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department established chokepoints at Angel’s Gate and Queen’s Gate entrances to the Port. The boats passively scanned vessels entering the port complex for any illicit radiation and nuclear threats. Additional officers from the Los Angeles Police Department, United States Customs and Border Protection and California National Guard’s 9th Civil Support Team also participated on board the vessels.
This is the second screening operation conducted by the coalition and they plan on routinely conducting future chokepoints to enhance security.
The boats were equipped with the latest radiation detection technology, purchased through Homeland Security grants and Port Security grants. Officers from the participating agencies were trained in radiation detection by the Department of Homeland Security.
“This coalition has worked together on numerous operations in the past in an effort to provide safety in the Port and prevent the possibility of dirty bombs or improvised nuclear weapons from being smuggled into the area,” said Sheriff’s Sergeant Mick Kelleher.
