Vernon, CA – The political side show that has become the city of Vernon, California has resulted in the election of a new city council member, maybe.

Word of more ballots "mysteriously" popping up after the polls closed...

Here is the "official" scoop from the Vernon City Clerk's Office.

"City Councilmember-elect Michael A. Ybarra received two votes in a count of two provisional ballots today, bringing his election vote total to 26-votes versus 19-votes for incumbent City Councilmember Daniel D. Newmire. Councilmember-elect Ybarra was born and raised in Vernon. He has worked in Vernon for 23-years. Ybarra family members have been in Vernon since the 1860s. The two provisional ballots, which required voter signature verification from the L.A. County Registrar/Recorder, had been submitted shortly before the polls closed at 8:00 p.m. on Election Day (Tuesday, April 10). The two provisional ballots remained unopened and uncounted until 7:30 a.m. today following the Registrar’s verification of each voter’s signature yesterday (Wednesday, April 11). Certification of the final vote in Vernon’s April 10 city council election will occur by a vote the Vernon City Council on Tuesday, April 17 at 9:00 a.m. The City of Vernon will hold a city council election on Tuesday, June 5 to fill a council vacancy created by the retirement of former Vernon Mayor Hilario Gonzales. Council candidates Luz Martinez and Reno Bellamy are officially running to succeed Mr. Gonzales and serve the remainder of his unexpired term on the city council.
