Daniel Gilbert Becerril II: Orange County Financial Consultant Charged with Teacher’s Murder

LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles County prosecutors charged an Orange County financial consultant with murder, money laundering and grand theft in a complex financial scheme that included the murder of an LAUSD school teacher, the District Attorney’s Office announced. Daniel Gilbert Becerril II, 35 (dob 9-11-76), was charged today in case BA394601 with 31 felony counts, including the March 18, 2008, murder of Alexander Merman, said Deputy District Attorneys Hilda Weintraub and Rob Knowles of the Real Estate Fraud Section. Becerril, of Huntington Beach, is scheduled to be arraigned sometime after 1:30 p.m. at the Foltz Criminal Courts Building, Department 30. Proseuctors will ask for no bail because they believe he’s a flight risk and a danger to the community. Merman, a 35-year-old Russian-born artist and elementary teacher who was found stabbed to death in his Montana Avenue apartment, allegedly gave Becerril a $250,000 a loan. Becerril allegedly began a complex money laundering scheme that defrauded Merman and a second victim, Sandra Soria, out of $1.4 million. If convicted, Becerril faces up to life in prison. In a separate but related case, Weintraub and Knowles also filed charges of grand theft, money laundering and forgery against Becerril’s wife, Sandra, his sister, Rebekah, and a third defendant, Abram Guajardo. The three defendants in case BA304600 are also due for arraignment today in Department 30. Sandra Raya Becerril, Rebekah Becerril and Abram Guajardo allegedly assisted in Becerril’s scheme to defraud Sandra Soria, who lost her Covina home to the four defendants.
