LOS ANGELES – An executive accused of taking almost $120,000 from a
non-profit organization that imparts life skills to youth in
juvenile detention centers and other at-risk
young people pleaded guilty today, the District Attorney’s Office announced.
Deputy District Attorney Michael Dean said Jacqueline Gelfand, 61, pleaded to three felony counts – one count of grand theft and two counts of commercial burglary – and admitted an allegation that the theft was of more than $100,000.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Richard Kemalyan said Gelfand will be sentenced on Feb. 9 in Department 34 of the Foltz
Criminal Justice Center.
Under the terms of a negotiated plea, the defendant is expected to be sentenced to 365 days in
county jail, 200 hours of community service and three years of probation. Additionally, she is expected to pay $86,568 to InsideOUT Writers, Inc.
Gelfand is eligible for state prison if she violates probation, under the terms of the negotiated settlement. The defendant already has paid $33,000 in restitution, the prosecutor said.
Gelfand is the former executive director of InsideOUT Writers. The organization offers programs for youth impacted by the criminal justice system, including creative writing classes for youth in
Los Angeles County juvenile detention centers and re-entry services for students released from detention.
The alleged theft took place between May 14, 2008, and Nov. 24, 2009, according to a criminal complaint filed in October 2011.
