VAN NUYS – Two men were charged today with capital murder in the Jan. 9 shooting a 24-year-old man after he tried to help his grandfather during a robbery, the District Attorney’s office said. Evin Adonis Ortiz, 22 (dob 1-23-89), and Rene Ramirez, 29 (dob 5-16-82), were charged in case LA069901 with one count each of special circumstance murder, attempted murder, assault with a firearm and second-degree robbery, said Deputy District Attorney Daniel Akemon with the Hardcore Gang Division. The complaint also includes gang and gun use allegations. In addition, Ramirez is charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. Ortiz is scheduled to be arraigned after 2:30 p.m. today at Van Nuys Superior Court, Department 100. Ramirez is due to be in court Wednesday, same department, for arraignment. Each is being held without bail. Ortiz, of Valley Glen, and Ramirez, of Panorama City, are charged with the special circumstance murder of Danilo Estuerdo Morales and the attempted murder and second-degree robbery of his 68-year-old grandfather, Manuel Flores. On Jan. 9, just before 7 p.m., three men allegedly jumped Manuel Flores and robbed him after he parked his car in the 8100 block of Coldwater Canyon Avenue. As the men fled, Flores screamed for help and his grandson rushed to his aid and chased the suspects. One of the three fired at Danilo, killing him. The special circumstance of murder for robbery makes this a potential death penalty case. Prosecutors will decide later whether to seek the death penalty. An investigation is continuing. The third suspect has not been identified.
