Jeff Baoliang Zhang, (dob 10-22-44), is scheduled to be arraigned later this afternoon at the Criminal Justice Center in Department 30. He was charged in case BA391915 with one felony count each of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, a 9 mm Smith and Wesson handgun, and shooting at an inhabited dwelling with an allegation that he personally used a firearm, said Deputy District Attorney John Gilligan.
Prosecutors will ask that Zhang be held without bail.
Zhang allegedly approached a guard at the consulate in the 400 block of Shatto Place shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday. He then allegedly began firing rounds, which hit the building. No one was injured.
Zhang turned himself into police later Thursday.
If convicted, he faces more than 20 years in state prison.
