Horrific scene out of Reno tonight. A crash at the Reno Air Show has resulted in "massive casualties." I just saw this video of the crash on CNN, and NBCLA. Please pray for those who lost their lives today. No word on the Reno Air Show web site about the crash. They do describe the show as follows: "The National Championship Air Races are prepared to entertain aviation fans throughout the day. Each year, in between the races, an illustrious group of aerobatic performers are featured in addition to military demonstration teams, providing entertainment all day long. Past military demonstration teams include the Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron – Blue Angels, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, and the Canadian Forces Snowbirds." What is ironic is that the promoters of the air show hyped "fast, low flying planes" for fan "enjoyment." Here is the official release promoting the Reno Air Show (Date of Release was August 31, 2011) Pilots expected to fly low, fly fast at 2011 National Championship Air Races Reno, Nev. – Roaring engines, high-speed thrills and the smell of jet fuel reunites friends and families under the northern Nevada skies each September. And, each September, the Reno-Stead Airfield takes on a new, yet familiar face, as pilots and aviation enthusiasts from around the world gather to experience the last event of its kind. Taking off Sept 14-18, the 2011 National Championship Air Races will welcome fans to be awed by talented rookies, storied pilots and breathtaking entertainment at the 48th annual event. “Once you experience the rush of adrenaline from air racing – whether it’s as a pilot, a volunteer or a fan – nothing gets in the way of the anticipation that builds as September nears,” said Mike Houghton, Reno Air Racing Association president and CEO. “Pilots and rookies train year-round to prepare for the National Championship Air Races and look forward to showcasing their talent in the sky.”
