DOWNEY – A 27-year-old man was charged today with vehicular manslaughter and other crimes for a hit-and-run fatality earlier this week.
Geoffrey Matthew Rocha (dob 8/23/84) of La Mirada appeared briefly in Downey Superior Court but his arraignment was postponed until Sept. 27 in Department 7.
Rocha is charged in case No. VA121729 with one count each of vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident and driving when privilege suspended or revoked.
During the early morning hours of Sept. 20, Rocha allegedly struck 72-year-old Ray Quintanilla at the intersection of Santa Gertrudes Avenue and Lawnhill Drive in La Mirada. The defendant then fled the scene, according to authorities.
Quintanilla, also of La Mirada, was out for his daily walk.
Authorities said the victim’s arm was severed at the shoulder with the force of the impact and carried away by the fleeing car. The limb was discovered about a mile from where the victim was struck.
Rocha later surrendered to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department authorities in Norwalk. Today, Downey Superior Court Judge Debra Cole-Hall set the defendant’s bail at $100,000.
If convicted as charged, Rocha faces a maximum state prison term of seven years.
