SAN FERNANDO – A family friend charged with fatally shooting an NBC Universal finance executive on St. Patrick’s Day pleaded guilty today to involuntary manslaughter, the District Attorney’s office announced.
David Armstrong, 32, entered the plea to the lesser charge and admitted he personally used a gun to fatally shoot Brian Kaplon, 32, said Deputy District Attorney Jeffrey Stodel.
The Porter Ranch resident entered his plea before Superior Court Judge Beverly O’Connell. The judge is expected to dismiss one count of murder when he returns Nov. 30 for sentencing. He faces up to 14 years in state prison.
On March 18, Kaplon went to Armstrong’s home in the 20000 block of Vercelli Way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and get a haircut. Near midnight, Armstrong pulled out his new AR-15 semiautomatic rifle and shot Armstrong once as the two men were in the garage.
Stodel said Armstrong, who had been drinking heavily, gave conflicting accounts of what happened.
