The crime occurred, authorities said, after the woman went to the El Monte recruiting office to inquire about joining the Navy. She took a practice written examination taken by potential recruits. She allegedly was driven away by the defendant on the ruse of going to a library to get study aids for the regular exam.
Authorities said the woman was instead driven to near her home and assaulted before being let go.
The woman reported the assault. Both El Monte police and the U.S. Navy were notified.
If convicted, Tran faces a possible maximum prison term of eight years.
Deputy District Attorney Taraneh Saba was assigned to prosecute the case.
