Incredible news out of Mexicali today that has sent a huge sigh of reliefe to one of our local Members of Congress, Gary Miller and his family.

Millers three grandchildren, who have been missing for 3 1/2 years, are now in protective custody after their mother Jennifer Lopez Dejohn was apprehended on parental kidnapping charges.

Many of us who have followed this situation never thought that this day would arrive.   I bet Congressman Miller must have huge mixed emotions today.
If you recall, On November 9, 2007, Walnut Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to a report of a parental abduction, in violation of court ordered custody. At that time it was alleged that Suspect Jennifer Lopez-Dejongh had fled with her three minor boys in violation of court ordered, shared custody with her ex-husband.
The suspect had been married to, and her children were fathered by Brian Miller, the son of United States Congressman Gary Miller (Diamond Bar). Detectives from the Major Crimes Bureau - Metro Detail of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department were in charge of the investigation. Throughout the years following the abduction, Investigators followed leads which indicated that the suspect had fled with the victims to Mexico. Although there was ongoing investigaThe Seal of the United States Federal Bureau o...Image via Wikipediative work by detectives, including continual interaction with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) regarding possible leads, no strong leads yielded results until yesterday (August 10, 2011). Special agents from the FBI, acting with Mexican law enforcement officials in Tijuana, located the suspect and victims in Mexico. Mexican law enforcement agencies providing assistance include: la Policía Municipal, la Policía Estatal Preventiva (PEP), and el Instituto Nacional de Migración (Inami), The children were unharmed and all were detained without incident. The suspect and victims were transferred by Mexican law enforcement officials to the custody of Detectives from Sheriff’s Major Crimes - Metro Detail and agents from the FBI at approximately 3:00AM today, at the San Ysidro border crossing. The suspect, now age 34, was transported to a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s patrol station and booked on the outstanding warrant for “Depriving Custody in Violation of a Court Order”, 278.5(A) California State Penal Code. Her bail is currently $500,000.00. The minor boys, now age 10, 10, and 12, were transferred to the custody of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, who will determine housing and custody arrangements.
The investigation regarding this case is continuing.
“My wife and I are extremely relieved that after more than three and a half years our grandchildren have been found unharmed and returned safely to the United States. My family is eternally grateful to the FBI, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Mexican authorities and all those whose hard work and unwavering dedication made this possible. I would also like to express my deep appreciation for all of my colleagues, friends, and constituents who have given my family their support and their prayers during this extremely difficult time.”

Jennifer Lopez Dejongh, wanted for parental kidnapping, was arrested yesterday in Mexicali by Mexican law enforcement officials from Tijuana who were working with the FBI, announced Steven Martinez, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office.
On Wednesday, August 10, Lopez Dejongh, age 34, was taken into custody in Mexicali, Mexico, pursuant to federal charges of Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution (UFAP). Lopez Dejongh was charged by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in connection with the parental kidnapping. Upon Lopez Dejongh’s return to the United States, it is anticipated Lopez Dejongh will be placed in the custody of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department and the federal government will dismiss the federal warrant charging UFAP. Lopez Dejongh will be prosecuted by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. The successful arrest of Lopez Dejongh and the return of her three children resulted from the cooperation between the FBI’s Legal Attaché assigned to the United States Embassy in Mexico City, San Diego FBI Border Liaison officers, Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Bureau, Mexican Tijuana Police, and FBI Los Angeles Field Office.
Here is more on the background of Congressman Miller:

Congressman Gary G. Miller was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1998 to represent California's 42nd Congressional District. Mr. Miller serves on the House Financial Services Committee, which oversees the United States' banks, stock exchanges, real estate market and insurance industry, and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, which oversees the nation's highways, railroads, airports and water infrastructure. As a member of these committees and a former business owner, Mr. Miller brings real-world experience to address the transportation, water and housing needs of the 42nd district.
In addition, he is working to reduce the United States' debt, create a fairer tax system, improve access to healthcare, ensure students receive a quality education, and stop the flow of illegal immigrants into our country.
Mr. Miller is chairman of the Building a Better America Caucus, a congressional organization promoting quality growth. He is also a member of the Republican leadership team as assistant whip.
Mr. Miller was born in Arkansas, but grew up in Whittier, California.   In his early twenties, he founded the G. Miller Development Company and met his wife, Cathy. On May 16, 1995, Mr. Miller was elected to the California State Assembly.  There he served as chairman of the Budget Committee and the Banking and Finance Committee, as well as vice chairman of the Transportation Committee.  His distinguished California State Assembly career is highlighted by 24 bills signed into law, successfully negotiating funding of the first class size reduction program, and a balanced budget that reduced the business tax rate to 1973 levels while maintaining a $310 million reserve.
