This week has not been kind to the East Coast of the United States. First a 5.9 earthquake slammed into Virginia causing panic and frayed nerves up and down the the Eastern time zone.  Now we have Hurricane Irene ready to pounce up and down the coast, and possibly smack dab into New York City and Washington DC. Irene is the first big Hurricane this season. We have been lucky so far, but this could cause a huge surge in tides and people in New York City could be in for a floods not seen in a long, long time. Here is the latest from the National Hurricane Center about the "power" of Hurricane Irene: At 8:00 pm EDT, the center of Hurricane Irene was located near latitude 23.5 north, longitude 75.0 west. Irene is moving toward the northwest near 12 mph and this general motion is expected to continue through tonight. A turn toward the north-northwest and then toward the north is expected Thursday and Thursday night. Irene is forecast to move across the central Bahamas tonight and over the northwestern Bahamas on Thursday. Maximum sustained winds are near 120 mph, with higher gusts. Irene is a Category 3 hurricane. Some additional strengthening is forecast during the next day or so and Irene could become a Category 4 hurricane by Thursday. Interests from the Carolinas northward through New England should monitor the progress of Irene. For storm information specific to your area in the U.S. — including possible inland watches and warnings — please monitor products issued by your local National Weather Service forecast office

Your local cerritos gal reporting in from Woodbridge Virginia. (East Coast on the Potomac). Storm seems to have been downgraded to a catagory 1. Local news is warning of severe flooding and possible power outages due to downed lines. So far, just some light rain. I brought the camera just in case. So far today is business as usual. The grocery stores were crazy last night. Long lines of people shopping for supplies. We have been asked to have 3 days of water etc, just in case.
The earthquake was a piece of cake to a So Cal girl, but a hurricane is all new! Armed and ready with my camera.
