Deputy District Attorney Robert Grace said Joshua Vick was convicted by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Bob Bowers after a court trial. The defendant’s sentencing is scheduled for May 23. He faces three life-without-parole state prison terms.
Vick was convicted of fatally shooting his mother and father, Mary and Gable Vick, Jan. 14, 2005, at their apartment in the 700 block of West Imperial Highway. Authorities said that on the same day, he kidnapped his former girlfriend, Tesha Collins, from an education center, where she was teaching.
Police spotted Vick driving in South Los Angeles the next day and pulled the car over. He was arrested after a gun battle with police. Collins body was found next to the car. She also was fatally shot.
Besides convicting Vick of three counts of first-degree murder and finding true the special circumstances of murder during a kidnapping and multiple murders, Judge Bowers found that the defendant personally used a handgun in the killings. The judge also convicted the defendant of one count each of robbery and attempted robbery, and three counts of making criminal threats.
Vick remained in custody without bail after his arrest on Jan. 15, 2005. A decision not to seek the death penalty was made shortly before the court trial before Judge Bowers began, Grace said.
