Los Angeles, CA
Details about that horrific and deadly shooting at the Coast Career Institute yesterday afternoon have just been released by members of the Media Division at the Los Angeles Police Department.  This incident could have turned into a calamity.  Here is what we know, and I would love to hear from my Blog readers if you were at this campus Wednesday afternoon.  Video clip and coverage from KTLA News. .

Los Angeles police officers arrested 22-year-old Law Thien Huynh moments after he shot his vocational school teacher Wednesday afternoon.

The victim was identified as 44-year-old Roberto Herrera.

Herrera worked two jobs.  One as a security job in the morning and as an instructor at Coast Career Institute in the afternoon and evenings for the last three years.

Huynh, allegedly waled onto the CCI campus yesterday at around 4 p.m. with a weapon and into the classroom where Herrera was teaching and literally "started shooting" according to witnesses.  One person, who did not want to be identified said "he could have murdered the entire class."  I cannot imagine the horror that these students must have gone through.

Central area patrol officers from the LAPD converged at the located at the 1300 block of South Hill Street after a "shots fired" call.

When officers arrived they saw Huynh, who matched the suspect’s description, standing on the sidewalk outside the school.  He was taken into custody without a struggle.

This could have been a horrific scene, beyond words.  According to LAPD officials, Huynh and 12 other students were attending a 24 week vocational class to become security guards.

According to witnesses, Huynh left the classroom briefly and returned armed with a handgun.  He either pushed or kicked open the classroom door and opened fire on the 44-year-old instructor, who was standing just a few feet inside the door.  Huynh tossed the gun into the classroom and walked out of the building.

The teacher died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.  Thank GOD, no other students were injured and it appears that the teacher was the intended victim.  The motive for the shooting is still under investigation.

Detectives recovered the weapon used in the shooting as well as other physical evidence.  Crisis intervention specialists from the Office of the Mayor were called to assist the witnesses in dealing the stress and trauma of the incident.

Huyuh, who lives in Gardena, will be booked for murder at the downtown Metropolitan Jail.  Anyone with information on this crime is urged to call Detective Brian Putnam, Central Homicide Unit, at 213-842-0727. Anonymous tips can be called into Crimestoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477), or by texting 274637 (C-R-I-M-E-S on most keypads) with a cell phone.  All text messages should begin with the letters “LAPD.”  Online tips may be placed at www.LAPDOnline.org, click on “webtips” and follow the prompts.

Also, I would like to hear from people who were on the campus yesterday during this horrific crime.  Share your thoughts.  I will keep you updated as soon as additional information is released.

Roberto also had a morning class. I know because I attend the morning class. He not only was a great teacher, but a close friend. He was like a older brother to me. He thought me not just the skills needed to become a security guard, but how to be a man. He will be missed by us all. Such a horrible thing to happen to a wonderful human being. I also knew the shooter Law, he attended the morning class for about 2 weeks before moving to the afternoon class. He seemed like a quite and respectful guy. I never would have thought him capable of this.
