Welcome to the age of Facebook campaigning here in the Golden State of California.

Yep. No longer do politicians hold "old school" press conferences to alert the media or their constituents that they are seeking yet another public office.

Sadly, those days are long gone.

Image via CrunchBaseYesterday, California Secretary of State announced via her "Facebook Fan Page" that she will challenge popular Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn in the upcoming special election to replace the retiring Rep. Jane Harman.

This is what she sent out to 5,182 "Facebook Fans:"

Debra Bowen Exciting news: I’ve decided to run for Congress in the 36th District! Thank you so much for your feedback and support over the last few days. But now we face a short-term sprint: While the date of the special election hasn’t been set yet, it will be held in the next two to four months, so there isn’t any time to waste.... Can you make a contribution to help me get my campaign for Congress off to a fast start?
