That darn DNA. Yep the pesky microbe has helped bag another creepy guy here in the South Bay.
In a stunning development, a 45-year-old ex-con was charged today with the 2003 sexual assault of a 17-year-old Redondo Beach girl at knife point thanks to a positive DNA test.
Today, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office announced that Sylvester Gene Rawls, (dob 3-1-65) was arraigned in Torrance Superior Court, Department and charged with two felony counts of "forcible oral copulation" with the special allegation that he used a deadly weapon (a knife) during his crime.
Deputy District Attorney Christi Frey is prosecuting the case.
Rawls allegedly attacked a female student in a campus bathroom at Redondo Union High School on Aug. 28, 2003.
Authorities were able to collect a DNA sample at the time of the attack. In December, a DNA hit came back allegedly identifying Rawls, who gave a DNA sample following a federal conviction of conspiracy to manufacture PCP, police said.
If convicted, the Long Beach resident is facing up to life in prison. He’s being held on $2 million bail.
