Tuscon, AZ:
Media reports out of Arizona have confirmed that Jared Loughner, 22 years old, is the person reportedly being held under suspicion of shooting Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and as many as 17 others.
Six more died at the scene.
Giffords was shot once in the head, and she is not out of surgery. She is in "critical" condition.
Some of the eyewitnesses said that Laughner looked like a "fringe character." I am not sure "what a fringe character" looks like, and I hope this doesn't turn into a political circus.
Laughner apparently shot Giffords and 15 others at a public event at a Safeway grocery store in Tucscon. He reportedly shot the congresswoman "point blank" in the head and may have come from inside the store.
He allegedly fired 20-30 rounds and hit "a number of people," including a 9 year old child, who died at a nearby hospital. One of Giffords' staff members tackled the shooter after he apparently ran out of ammunition. Eyewitnesses have described Laughner as "young, mid-to-late 20s, white, clean-shaven with short hair and wearing dark clothing." He was arrested upon arrival of the sheriff's department.
U.S. Capitol Police urged all members of Congress and staff to take "reasonable and prudent precautions regarding their personal security."
