SANTA ANA – Rafael Lopez, the 18 year old Anaheim teenager who was arrested in that horrific car accident in Buena Park on Saturday, which claimed the life of a popular father and son, has been formally charged with two felony counts of vehicular manslaughter.
Lopez appeared in an Orange County Superior Court on Tuesday and was charged in connection with a high-speed car crash that killed popular Oxford Academy student athlete Douglas Uselton, 17, and his father Steven Uselton, age 44.
Lopez, could spend up to 13 years in prison if found guilty of the charges. Members of the Orange County District Attorney's Office are claiming that he had a whopping .13 blood alcohol level – the legal limit for someone his age is .001 – when he "allegedly" caused the deaths of both the Uselton's.
Lopez is being held on $200,000 bail.
I have posted a blog on this tragic case just hours after this tragedy took place. Thousands of you have read about this case here since then, and dozens have sent notes about your frustration that this was totally preventable.
A tearful memorial was held last night at Oxford Academy, when Douglas was a standout star athlete and honor student. Hundreds of friends, family and community members attended the vigil, including Desiree Uselton, Douglas' mother, and his 15-year-old sister, Erin. Please continue to share your thoughts here on my blog, and keep everyone involved in this horrific ordeal in your thoughts and prayers this Christmas season.
Remember, never drink and drive, and if you are a teenager, WAKE UP and never get behind a wheel when you are partying...PERIOD. Life is too short and everyone is fragile when you are in a 5,000 lb car. More details, including funeral arrangements will be posted later. So sad. This has destroyed the lives of countless people, forever. THINK PEOPLE. TIME TO START a conversation...
