Denis Alberto Reyes: Long Beach Teen Charged as Adult in Peninsula Crash that killed Candace Bustamante, Jesus Calixto, Delysa Castro, and Javier Marquez

From the MEDIA DIVISION OF THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE:

LONG BEACH – A Long Beach teen suspected of being the driver of one of two cars involved in a deadly drag race in August was charged as an adult today with vehicular manslaughter and car theft, the District Attorney’s office announced.

Denis Alberto Reyes, who was 17 at the time of the Aug. 22 accident but who just turned 18, was charged as an adult after a Long Beach Juvenile Court Commissioner John Lawson determined he was unfit to be tried as a juvenile.

Reyes is suspected of stealing a 1997 Ford Taurus and racing with the driver of a Mustang down Ocean Boulevard on the Long Beach Peninsula just after midnight on Aug. 22. The two cars collided and three of the passengers in the Mustang were ejected from the vehicle. All three – Candice Bustamante, Jesus Calixto and Delysa Castro – were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Mustang, Javier Marquez, was taken to a hospital and died later.

Reyes allegedly fled the scene and was arrested later.

Reyes, who remains in custody, was charged in case NA087362 with four counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence with a hit-and-run allegation and one count of car theft. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday at Long Beach Superior Court, Department J. Prosecutors are asking bail be set at $250,000.
